El Chinero is a site in the Desert of Baja, California. Despite its name, little proof exists about a tragedy that took place here in

1916. Hundreds of Chinese migrants died while fleeing violence in mainland Mexico. How can one fill the void with images, construct an archive where none exist?

엘 치네로(El Chinero: 중국인)는 캘리포니아 바하(Baja) 사막에 있는 곳이다. 그 이름에도 불구하고 1916년 이곳에서 일어난 비극에 대해 증거가 될만한 것은 거의 남아있지 않다. 수백 명의 중국인 이주민들이 멕시코 본토에서의 폭력을 피해 도망치다 (이 사막에서) 죽었다. 어떻게 텅 빈 이곳을 이미지로 채우고 아무것도 없는 자리에 아카이브를 구축할 수 있을까?

Bio

Bani Khoshnoudi, who works as a filmmaker and visual artist, was born in Tehran and immigrated to the United States in 1979 during the revolution. She studied architecture, photography and cinema at the University of Texas at Austin and was studio artist at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in New York. Her works, inhabited by displacement and uprooting, explore themes of exile, modernity and its effects, memory and the invisible. Her films and work have been shown at festivals, museums and art centers around the world. In 2022, she was awarded the Herb Alpert Award for the Arts in Film/Video.

바니 코슈누디(Bani Khoshnoudi)는 영화감독 및 시각 예술가로, 테헤란에서 태어났으며 1979년 혁명 당시 미국으로 이민을 했다. 그녀는 텍사스의 오스틴 대학 캠퍼스에서 건축, 사진 및 영화를 공부하였으며, 뉴욕의 휘트니 미술관 독립 연구 프로그램에서 스튜디오 아티스트로 활동했다. 그녀의 작품은 이동과 뿌리 뽑힘으로 가득한 세계를 탐구하며, 망명, 현대성과 그 효과, 기억과 보이지 않는 것에 대한 주제를 다룬다. 그녀의 영화와 작품은 전 세계의 페스티벌, 박물관 및 예술 센터에서 상영되었다. 2022년에는 허브 알퍼트 예술상(Herb Alpert Award, Film/Video 부문)을 수상하였다.
