한 원로 조각가의 제작소에 박근혜 국정농단 사건의 여파로 인해 제작이 중단되어 그 골조만 남아있는 한 인물의 기념상이 있다.5M 가까이 되는 높이를 통해 이 인물을 향한 경외심이 느껴진다. 이는 아직 시대가 그를 제대로 떠나 보내지 못하였다는 것의 증거라 할 수 있을 것이다. 그래서 나는 영상 제작을 통해 제대로 그를 떠나보내기 위한 일종의 (나만의 그를 위한) 장례식을 기획 하였다. 물론 나에게는 암살당한 독재자에 불과하지만 누군가에게는 신격/영웅화된 그이기에 이에 걸맞은 웅장한 이미지 연출을 위해 드론 전문 촬영감독을 섭외하였다. 하지만철재건물특성으로인한드론의위성GPS기능의오류 그리고 기념상의 철제 지지대를 피하려는 드론의 충돌방지 센서 때문에 드론은 조종자(촬영감독)의 조종을 계속 거부한다. 이렇게 처음에 의도한 대로 촬영은 이루어지지 않았고, 결국 이를 무릅쓰고 계속 진행된 촬영중에 드론은 입력한 궤도를 거부, 이탈하여 그 인물의 골조를 받치고 선 철제기둥에 부딪혀 추락하는 것으로 영상은 끝이 난다.

Here is a frame of a statue of a person in the sculpture workshop of an artist*. The building of the sculpture was stopped two years ago when the scandal of ex-president Park Geun-hye and her friend Choi Soon-sil became exposed. The five-meter high frame was built to represent feelings of awe and respect that the people who planned the statue had felt. In other words, time has not completely said goodbye to the figure. I planned to capture the scene in a video and present this as a funeral, an act of leaving her to rest. I hired a drone and a professional drone operator to make more of a spectacle for the video creating a situation where the person’s scale is being defied just as she has been heroized. However, the drone refused to follow the operator’s orders because it was not well connected to the satellite GPS location which was inside of an iron producing factory. The drone tried to keep away from the iron scaffolding that was supporting the statue’s frame. The drone flew out of its intended direction and in the end crashed into the structure and fell down. The scene of the funeral to leave her turned out to be a failure through the resistance of the drone.

Bio

이정우는 학부에서 무대미술을 전공하고 2004년부터 2009년까지 영화미술 디자이너로 활동하다가, 2010년 독일로 이주하여 비디오 아트 디플롬(Diplom) 학위를 취득하고, 마이스터슐러(Meisterschüler) 과정을 마쳤다. 작가는 일반적인 사고방식으로는 이해할 수 없는 지점들, 그럼에도 불구하고 여전히 현실에서 기능하고 이를 유지하도록 만드는 아이러니한 현상에 주목한다. 즉, 양립할 수 없을 것처럼 보이는 시스템의 ‘작동과 오작동의 관계’에 천착하여, 영상매체를 기반으로 재구성하는 작업을 진행해 오고 있다.

LEE Jungwoo majored in stage design in undergrad, worked as a production designer from 2004 to 2009, and moved to Germany in 2010 where the artist received his diploma in video art and Meisterschüler. The artist focuses on what is hard to understand with ordinary thinking and the ironic phenomenon that still enables us to function and exist in reality. In other words, he inquires into the “relationship of function and malfunction” of a system that is incompatible and recomposes them using the medium of video.
