마르셀 아눙의 <단순한 이야기>는 1958~1959년에 감독과 프랑스 국영 텔레비전 방송국과 공동 제작한 작품이다. 영화는 매우 적은 예산으로 16mm로 촬영되었으며, 아눙은 말 그대로 완전히 혼자서 영화를 만들었다. <단순한 이야기>는 그럼에도 불구하고 제작 환경과 영화의 주제를 고려했을 때 합리적으로 예상할 수 있는 즉흥적 르포르타주와는 거리가 멀다. 이 영화의 플롯은 신문 뒷면의 기사에 영감을 받았는데 이는 체사레 자바티니의 고전영화의 시놉시스를 떠올리게 한다. 대략의 내용은 이렇다. 한 미혼모가 6~7살이 된 어린 딸과 함께 파리에 도착한다. 그녀의 지갑에는 겨우 150유로 밖에 없으며, 일자리를 찾아 도시로 왔다. 도시 변두리에 사는 친구와 함께 지내지만, 결국 이 여성은 친구가 연인과 함께 지내야 했기 때문에 호텔을 전전하는 신세가 된다. 직장을 구하기 위해 애쓰지만 방을 찾기도 힘들 뿐더러 직장을 찾는 동안 아이를 돌봐줄 사람도 없어 갈수록 상황은 악화된다. 마침내 돈은 다 떨어지고 그녀와 어린 딸은 공터에서 밤을 보내는데, 이 보잘 것 없는 거처 조차도 길 건너 저소득 주택에 사는 여성에 의해 빼앗기고 만다. 이것이 바로 영화의 이야기, 정말 단순한 이야기다. 아눙은 이 기본적인 골격에서 시작해 지금까지 만들어진 그 어떤 장편영화보다 더 정교하고 엄격히 통제된 형식적 구조를 만들었다. 내 생각에 마르셀 아눙의 <단순한 이야기>는  영화 역사상 몇 안 되는 진정한 걸작 중 하나다. Marcel Hanoun’s Une Simple Histoire was co-produced by the French national television network and the director in 1958-59. The film was shot in 16mm on a very low budget. Hanoun quite literally made the film all by himself. Une Simple Histoire nonetheless is as far removed as possible from the kind of improvised reportage that might reasonably have been expected considering the shooting conditions and subject of the film. The “plot,” inspired by an item on the back page of a newspaper, has a bare, spare pathos reminiscent of one of Cesare Zavattini’s classic film synopsis: a woman, in all likelihood an unwed mother, arrives in Paris with her child, a little girl six or seven years old. She has only 9300 old francs [150 euros] in her purse and has come to the city to look for work. Although she is taken in at first by a friend who lives on the outskirts of the city, she is soon forced to move from one dreary hotel to another, when her friend, fearing that the woman’s presence in her house may inconvenience her lover, asks her to leave. A futile search for work follows, and she also has difficulty finding a room or keeping one for more than a few days because she has a child, a hard time finding someone to care for her little girl while she looks for a job, and many other vicissitudes. Finally, after a certain number of days have gone by, her money's all gone, and she and the child are forced to spend the night in a vacant lot but are taken in the next morning by a kind woman who lives in a low-income housing project across the street. Such is the story, indeed a very simple one. Yet, starting from this basic skeleton, Hanoun constructs the most elaborate, most rigorously controlled formal structure of any feature film thus far made. In my opinion, Hanoun has created one of the few genuine masterpieces in the entire history of cinema.(Noël Burch)
