BORN OF THE YAM is an expanded cinema performance presented as a techno-mythological ritual of light and sound. Performed with multiple modified 16mm projectors and DIY machinery, 16mm film loops combining hand-processed and inkjet-printed sequences weave together fragmented visions from a mythic 11th century island, isolated in time. The images draw from an imagined mythology – recurring across the artists’ Unending Island project – centred around the birth of a demigod from a yam. 

Between elation and fear, the demigod figure is gradually manifested through visions formed from yam eco-developer and vegetal interventions, fusing with 3D-rendered virtual island-scapes. BORN OF THE YAM evokes the performativity of ritualism and idolization, to reflect on their surfacing in our modern political landscape. The event becomes a kind of collective “bonfire” fanned by the flames of obsession and fantasy. 

<얌의 탄생>은 빛과 소리로 펼쳐지는 기술-신화적 의례를 구현한 익스팬디드 시네마 퍼포먼스이다. 여러 대의 개조된 16mm 영사기와 DIY 장치를 활용해, 수작업 현상과 잉크젯 프린트로 제작한 16mm 필름 루프를 상영하며, 시간 속에 고립된 신화적 11세기 섬의 파편적인 환영을 엮어낸다. 작품의 이미지는 작가들의 연작 프로젝트 <Unending Island> 전반에 걸쳐 반복되는, 참마에서 태어난 반신(半神)을 중심으로 한 상상의 신화에서 비롯된다.

환희와 두려움 사이에서, 참마를 활용한 친환경 현상액과 식물성 개입을 통해 형성된 이미지들은 3D로 렌더링된 가상의 섬 풍경과 뒤섞이며 반신의 형상을 서서히 드러낸다. <얌의 탄생>은 의례와 우상화가 수행되는 방식을 호출함으로써, 그것이 오늘날의 정치적 풍경 속에서 어떻게 되살아나고 작동하는지를 성찰한다. 이 퍼포먼스는 집착과 환상이 부채질하는 불꽃 속에서 모두가 함께 둘러싼 하나의 '모닥불' 같은 집단적 사건으로 펼쳐진다.
