Description

CAMPHOR TIGER CHASE is a walking expanded cinema performance that thinks alongside bruised bodies, balms for pain relief, and the chase for the ghosts of tigers. Using a DIY 16mm portable projector, the performance reimagines Tiger Balm, a traditional ointment from Singapore used to relieve pain and aches, in relation to one of its key ingredients camphor - historically used for celluloid production. Tiger balm ointment is used to create handmade chemigram sequences alongside inkjet-printed frames. Phantom spirits of tigers endlessly chase and are chased by the artists, veering between moments of both hope and futility of mass-manufactured relief to ever growing pains endured in our world.

<장뇌 호랑이 추격>은 상처 입은 몸, 통증을 완화하는 연고, 그리고 호랑이의 유령을 쫓는 행위를 함께 사유하는 워킹 익스팬디드 시네마 퍼포먼스이다. 작가는 DIY 16mm 휴대용 영사기를 활용해, 통증 완화제로 널리 알려진 싱가포르의 전통 연고 '타이거밤(Tiger Balm)'을 셀룰로이드 제작에 역사적으로 사용된 주요 원료인 장뇌(camphor)와 연결하며 새롭게 재구성한다. 타이거밤 연고는 잉크젯으로 인쇄한 필름 프레임과 함께 핸드메이드 케미그램(chemigram) 이미지를 만드는 재료로 사용된다. 작품 속에서 호랑이의 유령은 끝없이 작가를 쫓고 또 작가에게 쫓기며, 대량 생산된 치유가 약속하는 희망과 그 허망함 사이를 오간다. 이를 통해 우리 세계가 끊임없이 견뎌야 하는 점점 더 커져가는 고통을 응시한다.
