Animal Studies relates to and overlaps the Short Film Series, which I began in 1975.

The beauty of working in a series is its flexibility; films can be added to or dropped, the

order and manner of projection can be varied. Each film is like a brick, insignificant in

itself, but can be combined into all kinds of structures.

My filmic interest in animals is that they are unselfconscious, authentic, and can’t act.

《동물 연구》는 내가 1975년에 시작한 'Short Film Series'와 맞닿아 있으며, 그 연작과 일부 겹쳐지는 작업이다. 연작의 형태로 작업하는 가장 큰 장점은 유연성에 있다. 작품을 새로 더하거나 빼낼 수도 있고, 상영 순서와 방식도 얼마든지 달리할 수 있다. 각각의 영화를 벽돌 하나로 볼 때, 그 자체로써는 미미해 보일 수 있어도, 서로 결합되면 온갖 형태의 구조를 만들어낼 수 있다.

내가 영화에서 동물에 관심을 갖는 이유는, 동물은 자의식이 없고, 진실되며, 연기를 할 수 없기 때문이다.
