Halfway through Sophie Watzlawick's latest short film, one catches a brief glimpse of a bloom of Aurelia Aurita, also known as „the common jellyfish” or „moon jellies” – not at all by happenstance, within a film that so tenderly weaves its delicate broderie of images around the concepts of sight and nature. 

Jellyfish are much more than just a serene, ethereal sight to behold, but indeed also fascinating creatures when one considers the way they perceive the world: instead of eyes, ears, and a cerebellum, the Aurelia Aurita has several bell-shaped, synaesthetic structures named "rhopalia" around its brims, which guide its sense of motion and space and allow it to perceive light and shadows. All of which is both the constitutive matter of cinema – and an invitation to consider a wholly different perceptive, sensorial approach to what surrounds us, particularly in an age that obfuscates traditional understandings of visibility, uprooting our capacity to articulate events in the form of traditional imagery or within typical patterns of thought and text. (At one point, the sound of an adjusting speaker input is heard, as if attempting to plug and unplug a given mode of insight.) 

Reconfirming these tectonic shifts, where night falls a thud explores the minutiae of natural textures, beings, and phenomena, an idling gaze steeped in equal amounts of grief, anxiety, and serenity, at times trembling as if in a state of existential tremor; all the while drawing a fine parallel between the materiality of nature and that of film, conjuring a sense of gravity in the face of ecological anguish and digital angst, underpinned by fleeting, stark poetic thoughts that encapsulate its sense of dread towards a world that is heading down a deeply unpredictable path. 소피 와츨라윅의 신작 중간중간 보름달해파리(Aurelia aurita)가 잠깐 등장한다. ‘흔한 해파리’ 혹은 ‘달 해파리’라고도 불리는 이 생명체의 모습은 우연히 삽입된 것이 아니다. 이 영화는 시각과 자연이라는 개념을 중심으로 섬세한 이미지가 자수를 수놓듯 짜여 있다.

해파리는 단순히 고요하고 몽환적인 존재 그 이상이다. 보름달 해파리가 세상을 인식하는 방식을 생각해보면 더욱 그렇다. 눈, 귀, 뇌 대신에 몸 가장자리에 분포한 종 모양의 시각 감각기관 로팔리아를 통해 움직임과 공간을 감지하고, 빛과 그림자를 인지하는 그 자체로도 놀라운 생명체다! 이는 영화의 기본 구성 요소이자, 우리가 세계를 인식하는 방식에 대한 새로운 감각적 접근 방식으로 인도하는 것이다. 특히 오늘날처럼 전통적인 시각에 대한 이해가 모호해지고, 기존의 이미지나 익숙한 사고 및 언어의 틀 안에서 서술하는 능력이 흔들리는 시대에 더욱 그러다하다.(영화 속 한 순간, 스피커 입력을 조정하는 듯한 소리가 들리는데, 마치 통찰의 한 방식을 연결하고 분리해보려는 시도처럼 느껴진다.) <밤이 쿵하고 떨어질때>는 인식의 지각변동을 담아낸다. 자연의 질감, 존재, 현상의 미세한 부분들을 탐구하고, 슬픔과 불안, 평온이 공존하는 시선을 따라간다. 때로는 실존의 떨림에 빠진 듯 떨리기도 한다.; 동시에 자연의 물질성과 영화라는 매체의 물질성 사이에 미세한 평행선을 그려낸다. 생태적 고뇌와 디지털 시대의 불안 속에 직면한 중력감을 불러일으키는 한편, 이 세계가 예측할 수 없는 길로 향해가는 가운데 단호하고 찰나적인 시적 사유로 뒷받침된다. Sophie Watzlawick is a Berlin-based film artist. Alongside her work as a filmmaker, she works artistically and technically on various projects in the fields of film, theater, performance and music. She is an active member and co-founder of the analog film collective LaborBerlin. Her film and sound work is based on sociopolitical issues viewed through the prism of philosophical and poetic concepts. The strong contrast between rigid social structures and the human dimension, also inseparable from life path, is of particular interest to her. She is interested in the hidden, in the signs that emerge in the dark, in those places whose ground is still unknown, and in seeing events that are commonly perceived as static in a new way. Her films are shown internationally at various festivals, museums and experimental music venues and distributed by Arsenal Verleih (Berlin) and Light Cone (Paris).

소피 와츨라윅은 베를린을 기반으로 활동하는 영화 아티스트다. 영화 제작자로서의 작업과 함께 영화, 연극, 공연, 음악 분야의 다양한 프로젝트에서 예술적, 기술적으로 작업하고 있다. 또한 그녀는 아날로그 영화 단체 LaborBerlin의 정회원이자 공동 창립자다. 그녀의 영화와 사운드 작업은 철학적, 시적 개념의 프리즘을 통해 바라본 사회정치적 이슈를 기반으로 한다. 특히 경직된 사회 구조와 인간적인 삶의 차원 간의 강렬한 대비, 그리고 그 대비가 개인의 삶의 경로와 어떻게 얽히는지에 관심을 갖고 있다. 그녀는 숨겨진 것, 어둠 속에서 드러나는 징후, 아직 밑바닥이 드러나지 않은 장소들, 정적인 것으로 인식되는 사건을 새로운 방식으로 바라보는 것에 관심이 있다. 그녀의 영화는 다양한 페스티벌, 박물관, 실험 음악 공연장에서 국제적으로 상영되고 있으며 베를린의 아스날 베라이와 파리의 라이트 콘에서 배급 중이다.
