Description

ELLIPTIC is a filmwork that considers an image as reflecting light. It looks at how brightly a beam of light is deflected as it hits an edge and transforms the image as it enters a lens. A delicately slow focus shift carries this movement along the cone of the visual field into a certain depth, and back again. Surprises appear slowly, and disappear to make place for a next one.

<엘립틱>은 이미지를 '반사된 빛'으로 사유하는 영화적 작업이다. 작품은 빛줄기가 가장자리에 부딪힐 때 얼마나 밝게 굴절되는지, 그리고 그 빛이 렌즈로 들어오며 이미지를 어떻게 변형시키는지를 주목한다. 섬세하고 느릿한 초점의 이동은 시야의 원추(cone)를 따라 이러한 움직임을 특정 깊이까지 실어 나르고, 다시 되돌아온다. 예기치 못한 순간들이 천천히 나타났다가, 다음 순간에게 자리를 내주며 이내 사라진다.

Bio

Els van Riel lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.  Studied photo- and cinematography, and works as a photographer, editor and producer for various photo-, film-, and video-productions.

Her films, video's and installations explore the impact of detailed changes in moment, movement, matter, light and perception.

“With links to the tradition of structural film making, the work by the Brussels based film-and videomaker, Els van Riel, explores the basic elements for cinema -time and light- and develops a form for new aesthetic pleasure, bypassing any symbolism and narrativism. For van Riel the projector is a central figure in the cinematographical act of giving form to a screening, performance or installation. The mechanical image source becomes actively present as if it were a living object.

엘스 반 리엘은 벨기에 브뤼셀을 기반으로 살아가며 작업하고 있다. 사진과 영화 촬영을 공부했으며, 다양한 사진·영화·비디오 프로덕션에서 사진작가, 편집자, 프로듀서로 활동하고 있다.

그의 영화, 비디오, 설치 작품들은 시간의 순간, 움직임, 물질, 빛, 그리고 지각의 세밀한 변화가 가져오는 파급력을 탐구한다. 그의 작업은 구조 영화(structural film)의 전통과 맞닿아 있다. 그는 영화의 기본 요소인 시간과 빛을 탐구하며, 일체의 상징주의와 서사주의를 배제한 채 새로운 미적 즐거움의 형태를 발전시킨다. 반 리엘에게 프로젝터는 상영, 퍼포먼스, 혹은 설치에 형태를 부여하는 영화적 행위의 중심적인 존재다. 이 기계적인 이미지의 원천은 마치 살아있는 객체처럼 스크린 위에 능동적으로 존재감을러낸다.
