Description

Landscape transforms journalistic investigations into an artistic enquiry. A collection of press photographs reporting on land issues in modern day Vietnam is made into a video with repeating sound evoking a real, automatic slide show. This stark form of presentation is staged to demonstrate a mysterious reality, anonymous landscapes and people, their same pointing gesture toward something unknown.

“I am interested in the idea of landscapes as quiet witnesses to history. During my online search for such photos, I came upon hundreds of images in which anonymous persons were portrayed in landscapes – and always in the same position, pointing to indicate a past event, the location of something gone, something lost or missing. We are left knowing nothing about the people, their specific thoughts or feelings, only with their repetitious sameness – always indicating, pointing to ‘evidence’ of something – never good. Together these anonymous witnesses, portrayed in compelling uniformity by innumerable Vietnamese press photographers, seem to be indicating a direction, a way forward out of the past, a fictional journey.”

<풍경>은 저널리즘적 조사를 예술적 탐구로 변환한 작품이다. 현대 베트남의 토지 문제를 다룬 보도 사진들을 모아, 반복되는 소리와 함께 실제 자동 슬라이드쇼를 연상시키는 영상으로 엮어냈다. 이 냉정하고 단호한 형식의 제시는 하나의 신비로운 현실을 연출한다. 익명의 풍경들과 사람들, 그리고 그들이 알 수 없는 무언가를 향해 반복적으로 취하는 동일한 손짓.

"나는 역사의 조용한 증인으로서의 풍경이라는 개념에 관심이 있다. 그러한 사진들을 온라인으로 찾아보던 중, 나는 풍경 속에 익명의 인물들이 등장하는 수백 장의 이미지를 발견했다. 그들은 언제나 같은 자세로, 과거의 사건이 있었던 곳, 무언가가 사라진 곳, 잃어버린 것이나 없어진 것의 위치를 가리키고 있었다. 우리는 그 사람들에 대해, 그들의 구체적인 생각이나 감정에 대해 아무것도 알 수 없다. 다만 그들의 반복적인 동일함만이 남는다. 언제나 무언가의 '증거'를 가리키고 있는, 결코 좋은 것이 아닌 무언가를. 수많은 베트남 보도 사진가들에 의해 놀라운 균일함으로 포착된 이 익명의 증인들은, 함께 하나의 방향을 가리키는 것처럼 보인다. 과거로부터 나아가는 길, 하나의 허구적 여정."

Bio

Nguyễn Trinh Thi is a Hanoi-based filmmaker and artist. Traversing boundaries between film and video art, installation and performance, her practice currently explores the power of sound and listening, and the multiple relations between image, sound, and space, with ongoing interests in history, memory, representation, landscape, indigeneity, and ecology.

Her films and video art works have been shown at festivals and art exhibitions including Asia Cultural Center, Bienal de São Paulo, Mori Museum, M+, Documenta15, Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Sydney Biennale, among others. 

Nguyễn is founder and director of Hanoi DOCLAB, an independent center for documentary film and the moving image art in Hanoi since 2009. 

응우옌 트린 티(Nguyễn Trinh Thi)는 하노이를 기반으로 활동하는 영화감독이자 예술가이다. 영화와 비디오 아트, 설치, 퍼포먼스의 경계를 넘나드는 그의 작업은 현재 소리와 듣기의 힘, 그리고 이미지·소리·공간 사이의 다층적 관계를 탐구하고 있으며, 역사, 기억, 재현, 풍경, 토착성, 생태에 대한 지속적인 관심을 이어가고 있다.

그의 영화 및 비디오 아트 작품들은 아시아문화원, 상파울루 비엔날레, 모리 미술관, M+, 도큐멘타15, 아시아·태평양 현대미술 트리엔날레, 시드니 비엔날레 등 국내외 영화제 및 미술 전시에서 소개되었다.

응우옌은 2009년부터 하노이에서 독립 다큐멘터리 영화 및 무빙 이미지 예술 센터인 하노이 독랩(Hanoi DOCLAB)을 설립하여 운영하고 있다.
