Description

In “The Living Room,” objects on the wall one by one explode or burn and disappear one after the other while various acting events take place nearby. “The Living Room” opens with a wall completely bare, then all these objects return from the dead with the clothes of the standing pregnant woman who then does a striptease. Michael Snow: “<The Living Room> digitally dramatises and multiplies chosen manifestations and implications of On/Off and/or Absence/Presence.”

<거실>에서는 벽에 붙은 물건들이 하나 둘씩 폭발하거나 불타 사라지며 주변에서 다양한 연기-이벤트가 펼쳐진다. 이 작품은 완전히 노출된 무대로 시작하고, 이 모든 물건은 스트립 쇼를 하는 임산부의 옷과 함께 죽음에서 돌아온다. 마이클 스노우: “<거실>은 On/Off 그리고/또는 부재/실재의 선택된 표현과 의미를 디지털 방식으로 각색하고 증폭시킨다.”

Bio

Michael Snow (December 10, 1928 – January 5, 2023) has been one of the most influential avant-garde filmmakers ever in history. He brought human perception of moving images into a new dimension of aesthetic through cinematic experience. The gaze through a camera lens establishes the relationship to the world beyond the act of looking. Along with the birth of photography and cinema, the process of identification of believing the world itself as what we see through camera became common. Michael Snow has been exploring this belief based on the process. He doesn’t deny or betray it but conserve it rather at the same time require constant re-considering. It is the spectator’s experience that matters here, and the meaning acquired from it becomes something unspeakable that cannot be explained in traditional ways. At this point, the experience becomes distinctly transcendent and invites us to approach the understanding of meaning through perception as a phenomenological observer.

It is an unprecedented honor for EXIS to bring the full spectrum of the work of Michael Snow, an important renaissance man of our time who is an experimental filmmaker, installation artist, painter, and musician across the visual arts, to Korean audiences.

실험영화 역사상 가장 영향력 있는 작가 중 한 명으로 평가받고 있는 마이클 스노우(1928년 12월 10일 출생 - 2023년 1월 5일 사망)는 이미지에 대한 인간의 인식작용을 영화적 경험을 통해 새로운 미학적 차원으로 불러들였다. 카메라를 통한 인간의 응시는 단순히 바라보는 것 이상으로 세계와 존재의 관계를 설정해주었다. 사진과 영화의 탄생과 더불어 카메라를 통해 바라보는 세상이 그 세상 자체인 것으로 동일화하는 인식이 발달하게 되었고 마이클 스노우의 탐구는 그러한 동일화에서 발생하는 믿음에 의거한다. 그는 그것을 파괴하는 것이 아니라 환영으로의 몰입을 보존함과 동시에 지속적인 재고려를 요구한다. 여기서 중요한 것은 관람자의 경험인데 그것을 통해 획득하는 의미는 전통적인 방법으로 설명할 수 없는 무언의 것이 되고 만다. 이 지점에서 그 경험은 확연히 초월적인 것으로 발전됨과 동시에 인식을 통한 의미의 이해체계를 현상학적 관찰자로 접근하도록 유도된다.

실험영화작가, 설치미술가이자 화가이면서 시각예술 전반을 아우르는 음악가이기도 한 우리 시대의 중요한 르네상스인인 그의 작품 세계의 넓은 스펙트럼을 한국 관객들에게 선사할 수 있는 엑시즈의 전무후무한 영광이기도 하다.
