이 영화에서 작가는 L.A.에서 서울의 눈(snow)를 찾으러 다니는 불가능한 여정을 시작한다. 그러나 아이러니하게도 L.A.에서 그녀는 다양한 눈의 재현들을 찾아낸다. 이곳에 존재하는 것처럼 보이는 ‘눈’은 사실 존재하지 않는다. 이 ‘눈의 재현’들은 이민자들의 도시 L.A.의 판타지이고 또 스스로 이방인 그 자체이다. 보이스 오버와 다양한 층위의 파운드 푸티지들을 적극적으로 활용하여 새로운 ‘글쓰기’ 로써의 영화를 탐구한다. 그녀의 멜랑콜리는 곧 잡을 수 없는 일루전에 대한 인류보편적 갈망과 향수이며, 단순한 소비주의에 대한 비판이 아닌 ‘이미지’에 대한 비평, 실재와 가짜, 시뮬라크르, 재현에 대한 담론과도 맞닿아 있다.

This is the story of a foreign woman in Los Angeles who wants to find snow, which not only reminds her of her homeland, South Korea, but is something she identifies with as a "stranger" to Los Angeles. However, her seemingly impossible attempt encounters unexpected results. Interestingly, Los Angeles is filled with numerous and different representations of snow. There are lots of synthetic snow effects in the Hollywood movie industry. From discovering a special-effect factory called Snow Business Hollywood to the Magic Snow Co. which operates within shopping malls in downtown L.A, her personal longing for snow meets with our more fundamental desire toward elusive magic and illusion.

Bio

박민하는 이화여자대학교 서양학과와 미국 칼아츠(CarArts)에서 아트과 석사를 졸업하고 현재 서울과 LA를 오가며 활동하고 있다. 중국과 북한의 국경지대에서 촬영한 ‹단동여행기›, 다국적 기업 IKEA 인터넷 쇼핑과 불면증에 대한 작업 ‹익명의 날들을 위한 꿈›, LA에서 눈을 찾는 A Story of Elusive Snow 등 국경과 이주(migration)에 대한 개인적 반응을 소재로 한 작업들을 해왔으며 국내와 해외에서 다수의 전시, 스크리닝에 참여하였다.

Min-ha Park is a media artist and filmmaker who lives and works in Los Angeles and Seoul. Her works are mainly presented through screening and installation. Her recent interest is how cultural, social, and political context affects one’s way of "seeing". She analyzes mechanisms of visuality and decoding the image. This is a meaningful gesture for her, a micro resistance against the macro visual frame that surrounds us.
