Description

A sensorial, left-field take on Thai political history that moves between a subdued past etched in the landscape of Khao Kho mountain, once a stronghold of communist insurgents, and a dynamic near-present marked by Bangkok’s 2021 anti- government protests.
During his premiership from 1938 to 1957, Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram had planned to relocate the capital city of Thailand to Phetchabun province; in WWII, he established the Ministry of Treasury at Tham Ruesi Sombat Cave where gold bars and the Emerald Buddha were hidden from the Japanese army. Since 2014, the dictator regime has attempted to diminish these historical sites. Now the remnants of the fortress and deteriorated Communist sites still remain among the Phetchabun mountains. The film interweaves these landscapes and echoes the dark enclosure of the current turbulent Thailand.

태국 정치사에 대한 감각적이고 독특한 시각을 제시하는 이 작품은 과거와 현재를 오가며 진행된다. 과거는 공산주의 반란군의 요새였던 카오 코(Khao Kho) 산지의 지형에 새겨진 억압된 역사로 나타난다. 한편, 역동적인 현재는 방콕의 2021년 반정부 시위로 특징된다.
1938년부터 1957년까지 수상임기 동안 플랙 피분송크람(Plaek Phibunsongkhram) 육군 원수는 태국의 수도를 펫차분 (Phetchabun) 지방으로 이전할 계획을 세웠으며, 제2차 세계 대전 동안 그는 재무부처를 탐 루에시 솜밧(Tham Ruesi Sombat) 동굴에 설치하여 금괴와 에메랄드 불상을 일본군으로부터 숨겼다. 2014년 이후 독재 정권은 이러한 역사적인 장소들을 축소시키려 했다. 현재 펫차분 산지에는 요새의 흔적과 퇴화된 공산주의 유적과 잔해가 여전히 남아 있다. 이 영화는 이러한 풍경을 엮어 현재 격동하는 태국이 처한 어두운 현실에 울림을 준다.

Taiki Sakpisit is a Thai filmmaker and visual artist. He uses the techniques and history of cinema to unpack Thailand’s troubled past, using those to embed a resounding, but subtly expressed, political commitment in his experimental films. His works explore the underlying tensions and conflicts, and the sense of anticipation in contemporary Thailand, through precise and sensorially overwhelming audio-visual assemblage using a wide range of sounds and images. His feature film The Edge of Daybreak premiered at the IFFR in the Tiger Awards Competition and won the FIPRESCI award. His work was recently exhibited at the 14th Gwangju Biennale.

타이키 삭피싯(Taiki Sakpisit)은 태국의 영화감독이자 시각 예술가다. 그는 영화의 기술과 역사를 활용하여 태국의 힘든 과거를 해체하고, 이를 바탕으로 실험적인 영화에 강렬하지만 미묘하게 표현된 정치적 의지를 담아낸다. 그의 작품은 다양한 소리와 이미지를 사용하여 현대 태국의 잠재적인 긴장과 충돌, 그리고 압도적인 오디오-비주얼 조합을 통해 기대감을 정밀하고 감각적으로 탐구한다. 그의 장편 영화 The Edge of Daybreak은 로테르담 국제영화제에서 타이거 어워드 경쟁 부문에서 세계 초연을 가졌으며, FIPRESCI상을 수상했다. 그의 작품은 최근 14회 광주 비엔날레에서 전시되었다.
