홋카이도의 북동부 항구도시, 쿠시로를 배경으로 하여 연료'는 전문적인 요리사 시즈코 나카지마가 일본의 가장 오래된 로바타야끼 레스토랑에서 일하는 것을 조용히 관찰한다. 느리게 흘러가는 편집은 시간이 많이 드는 요리에 대한 관조적인 시각과 잘 어울린다. 영화는 아이누 토착문화에 대해 은은하게 언급하며, 화재와 현대 사회의 사람들을 둘러싼 환경문제를 그려낸다. 

Set in Kushiro, the North-Eastern port city in Hokkaido, FUEL quietly observes an expert griller Shizuko Nakajima working at one of the original and oldest Robata-yaki restaurants in Japan. While the slow-paced editing is matched with contemplative visuals of slow-cooking, the film makes subtle reference to indigenous Ainu culture, as well as envisages environmental issues surrounding the fire and humans in contemporary society.
