<가을 나무>는 두 가지 방향을 설명하는 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 시각적으로는 이 영화는 구체를 추상으로 전환한다.(흰 배경에 대치되는 나무는 지시성과의 어떤 연관성도 파괴하는, 파괴적 힘과 같은 역할을 수행한다.) 반면 사운드는 정 반대의 방향으로 나타난다. 사운드트랙은 잉크를 사용해 필름위에 페인트 칠을 해서 만들었으며, 시작부분에서는 어떤 추상적인 느낌이지만 점점 지시성을 얻게 되면서 결국 천둥과 같은 소리고 인식하게 된다. 더욱이, 영화는 이 두 가지 대비되는 운동은 서로를 완성해 가며, 보이는 이로 하여금 전율케 한다. Bäume im Herbst can be understood as describing two opposite directions – visually, it enacts a conversion of the concrete into abstraction (placing the treetops against a white background acts like a disruptive force, rupturing any connection with referentiality), while the sound appears to follow the opposite path. As the soundtrack was painted onto the film using ink, it starts off as something abstract that further gains referentiality and becomes recognizable as thunder.
