내게 있어 영화를 하고자 하는 이유는 영화의 몽타주 시퀀스였다. 음악과 대사가 없는 짧은 장면의 순간들도 서정적으로 압축된 행위와 시간의 압도적인 순간들. 서사 영화에서 이런 장면들은 순수 영화를 나타내지만, 이는 사실 우리가 느끼고, 보고, 기억하고 꿈꾸고 환상을 느끼는 방식에 더 가깝다. 작품의 제목은 몽타주가 기억과 닮아 있는 방식과 어떻게 효율적으로 감정적으로 중요한 순간들로 편집해 내는지 드러내고 있다. 히치콕은 “영화는 지루한 부분이 잘려나간 삶과 같다.”라고 못을 박았다. 나는 영화의 지루한 부분 역시 도려내어 이를 수정할 것이다.

홈 무비와 스톡 푸티지를 사용해 이 영화는 내가 만든 작품 <기뻐할 이유>보다 다소 어둡고 더 장난기가 있다. 영화의 음악은 필름을 만드는 동안 강박적으로 듣던 고전적인 아르헨티나 탱고를 사용했다. 난 스페인어를 모르지만 음악과 가사에서 느껴지는 감정은 언어의 한계를 넘어선다.

It was the montage sequences in movies that made me want to make movies. The sweeping moments where action and time are condensed in a lyrical but brief series of shots, supported by music and dialogue-free. These scenes in narrative film stand out as pure cinema, and much closer to the way we feel, see, and the way we remember, dream, and fantasize. The title reflects the way montage resembles memories, and how it economically edits them down to the moments with emotional significance.

Hitchcock’s comment “cinema was like life, with the boring parts cut out” nails it; I would amend this by cutting out the boring parts of cinema as well.

Using home movies and stock footage, the flavor here is slightly darker and more mischievous than Reasons To Be Glad. The music consists of classic Argentine Tangos which I was listening obsessively to while drawing the film. While I don’t speak Spanish, the emotions of the music and lyrics transcend the limitations of language.
