영화 전체가 호주에서 촬영된 <더블 페이즈>는 마키노 다카시가 포착한 개별적 시각적 연대기를 따른다. 영화는 ‘자연계'의 복잡성이 어떻게 지속적으로 환원적으로 재구성되는지 관심을 갖는다. 세계의 단안적 감각과 단순한 것을 밀어내고 마키노는 생생한 경험의 강렬한 감정적 투사로 이에 응답하려 한다. 일상적 경험이 담아낼 수 있는 것들을 훨씬 뛰어 넘어, 이 영화는 이미지를 연쇄적으로 충돌시켜 거의 우주적 복잡성의 폭포처럼 만든다. 우리 이전에 출연했던 세계로 우리는 늘 손을 뻗고 우리 자신을 확장시켜야 함을 상기시키는 작품. Filmed entirely on location in Australia, Double Phase follows a discrete visual chronology captured by Takashi Makino. It considers how the complexity of ‘natural world’ continues to be reductively framed within contemporary society. Pushing back against the simplistic and monocular sensing of the world, Makino responds with an intensely affective projection of lived experience. Moving far beyond the capacity of lived day to day experience, the film collides image after image into a cascade of almost-cosmic complexity. A reminder that we must always be reaching out and extending ourselves into the world that emerges before us. (ASIA TOPA 2020)
