Probably the first essay-film by the German filmmaker, Varför är det krig? proposes an ordering of heterogeneous images, mostly stills (paintings, drawings and engravings by known and unknown artists, photos). In this pamphlet denouncing war as an instrument of domination and oppression, Nestler strives to understand its ideological and economic causes, as well as the tragic effects it has on societies and the life of the peoples.
