대만 동부의 화롄에 살고 있는 중년의 재향 군인이 등장하는 이 작품은 주인공의 단순한 일상에 대한 사실주의적이고 힘 있는 묘사다. 이 작품은 평범하지 않은 시대를 산 평범한 사람에 관한 것이다. 이 작품의 힘은 주인공은 그대로 관찰하고 관객들에게 해석의 과제를 맡긴다는 점에서 나온다. 이 작품은 작가의 UCLA 졸업작품이다. 미국에 체류하는 동안 작가는 대만의 고속도로를 건설하는 도중에 목숨을 잃은 사람들에 관한 기사를 읽게 되었다. 그는 이 사건에 관한 작품을 만들고 싶었지만, 대만에 돌아오기 전에 이미 건설이 완료되어 그는 촬영 장소를 화롄에 있는 거대한 댐으로 옮겼다. 작가는 오디션을 통해서 만난 여러 사람들 중에 유필가를 주인공으로 선택했다. 영어로 내레이션이 진행되는 이 작품은 유필가가 자신의 이름, 나이, 고향을 밝히면서 시작된다. 그는 1인칭으로 댐건설 공사에서의 자신의 노동과 삶에 대해 설명한다. 당시에 보통 사람들에 관한 영화는 드물었다. 이 작품은 대만 최초의 시네마 베리테 작품으로 평가받고 있으며 미국의 플래허티 세미나에서 상영된 바 있다.
Featuring a middle-aged veteran living in Hualien County, the film is a realistic and powerful portrayal of his simple daily life. It is a film about ordinary people during an extraordinary historical moment. The power of the film resides in its attempt to observe the subjects as they are and leave the task of interpretation to the viewers. Liu Pi-chia is Richard Yao-chi CHEN's thesis film at UCLA. During his time in the US, CHEN read newspaper articles about people who died while constructing a highway in Taiwan.  He wanted to make a film about this but construction was complete before his return to Taiwan, so he changed the location to a large dam in Hualien. Richard Chen auditioned many people until finally choosing Liu Pi-chia as the protagonist. Narrated in English, the film opens with Liu Pi-cha introducing his name, age, and hometown.  He explains his work and life at the dam construction site in first-person. Films about common people were rare at this time; this film was named the first Cinéma vérité documentary in Taiwan and was selected to screen at the Flaherty Seminar in the US.
