“낫(매듭)”은 물건들을 포장하거나 묶을 때 사용된다. “낫(부정)"은 선을 긋고 지운다는 의미다. 지휘자 빌헬름 휘르트방글러에 관한 다큐멘터리, 그리고 내가 사는 곳 근방의 벽돌 벽 위에 그린 스텐실 그래피티 작업을 재료로 삼아 만들었다. 한 소녀가 벽에 그린 그래피티는 다른 그래피티에 의해서 지워졌다. 이것이 작업의 중심 요소였다. 또한 전함 애리조나 호의 잔해를 위에서 내려다보는 진주만에서 촬영된 푸티지도 사용하였다. 이 푸티지는 시간이 흘러서 적색을 띠고 있다. 그리고 테러리스트 공격 다음 날 아침의 맨체스터에서 촬영된 푸티지도 사용하였다. 이 모든 것을 합치고 여기에 구구단표를 네 가지 다른 언어로 반복적으로 읽는 음향이 추가되었다. 모든 것이 중첩되었다. 어떤 것의 내용이 중요한 것이 아니라 기억, 즉 부정되고자 노력하는 부정항도 중요하다. 이 작품은 음악과 회화, 정치, 갈망과 후회에 관한 것이다. 중첩효과가 가장 중요한 장치다. 2배로 늘리고 3배로 늘리는 행위는 여러가지 함의를 암시한다.
“KNOT”—wrapping things up, tying things up. “NOT “– cross out, erasure. Material from a documentary about conductor Wilhelm Fürtwangler, material from a graffiti stencil work on a brick wall near where I live, a stencil of a girl writing something on the wall, what she wrote crossed out by another act of graffiti. These are the main elements. Also footage looking down at the water of Pearl Harbor with the ruins of battleship Arizona beneath. It had turned red with age. And some footage from Manchester the morning after the terrorists struck. All are composed against a sound piece, a multiplication table repeated in four languages. Everything superimposed. It’s not just about what it’s about, but also memory, negatives that try to get negated. About music and painting. Politics, longing and regret. Superimposition is the primary device. The doubling and tripling suggest many implications.
