이 작품은 세 개의 섹션으로 이루어져 있다. 이 작품은 원래는 아버리텀 연작과 함께 상영하기 위해 만든 것이 아니라 새로운 작품이다. 이 작품의 주요 부분은 무성으로 만들어졌고 또한 무성영화의 속도(초당 18프레임)로 영사되도록 제작되었다. 영화에서의 소리없음은 의심할바 없이 후천적인 취향이지만, 그것이 드러내는 섬세함과 친밀함은 매우 풍부한 즐거움을 준다. 영화를 통해 인간존재를 포함시키는 방법은 두 가지가 있다. 하나는 인간존재를 묘사하는 방법이고, 다른 하나는 인간존재의 모든 특징을 갖는 영화형식을 창조하는 방법이다. 그 특징들이란 부드러움, 관찰력, 공포, 호기심, 세계로 들어선다는 감각, 갑작스럽고 어두운 혼란과 암류, 확장, 후퇴, 수축, 이완, 숭고한 계시 등이다. 이 작품에서 스크린은 “말하는 인물"로 변형되며 이미지는 순수한 에너지로서 기능하지 이차적 상징이나 정보 혹은 스토리텔링의 원천이 되지는 않는다. 숏들이 결합되면서 지혜의 계시가 이루어진다. 몽타주는 언어적 이해가 아닌 현동성과 현재성으로 이어진다. 서사란 관객과 스크린 사이에서 벌어지는 일이며, 소리없음, 즉 침묵은 시적인 동시에 조형적인, 섬세한 시각성이 완전하게 경험될 수 있도록 해준다.
Colophon (for the Arboretum Cycle) has three sections. It is in the spirit of the early Chinese landscape colophons, a text added to the horizontal scroll at a later date from when the landscape itself was enacted. Colophon was not made to be shown along with the Arboretum Cycle, but a new thing, a spring later, a different maker, so to speak.

너새니얼 도스키는 1943년 뉴욕에서 태어난 실험영화감독이다. 1964년에 첫 작품을 발표한 이후에 현재까지 왕성하게 작품 활동을 하고 있다. 종종 그의 영화는 존재 자체로 오랜 시간 동안 많은 사람들에게 잊혀진 영화의 속도감과 영화보기의 문제를 환기시켜왔다. 그는 언어적 설명이 갖는 재현의 문제와 주제 설정이 시각적인 것을 압도할 때 언제나 영화는 한계를 갖는다고 자신의 저서 ‘헌신적 시네마’(2003)에서 말했다. 구겐하임, NEA, 록펠러 재단 등 여러 예술기금을 받았으며, 그의 작품은 뉴욕현대미술관, 퐁피두 센터, 테이트 모던 등의 뮤지엄과  뉴욕영화제, 토론토 영화제 등의 아방가르드 영화 섹션에 자주 소개되고 있다.
Nathaniel Dorsky, born in New York City in 1943, is an experimental filmmaker and film editor. In his book Devotional Cinema (2003), Dorsky writes of the long-standing link between art and health as well as the transformative potential of watching film. He also writes of the limitations of film when its vision is subservient to a theme or representative of language description, which can describe a world but does not actually see it. Dorsky was a visiting instructor at Princeton University in 2008 and he has been the recipient of many awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship 1997 and grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, two from the Rockefeller Foundation, and one from the LEF Foundation. He has presented films at the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Tate Modern, the Prague Film Archive, the Vienna Film Museum, Princeton University, Yale University, and frequently exhibits new work at the New York Film Festival’s Views from the Avant-Garde and the Wavelengths program of the Toronto International Film Festival.
