Description

Shot with a camera clamped to the lowered window of a train traveling from Birmingham to London. Filmed in time-lapse, on projection the two-hour journey is abbreviated to two minutes. The long exposure-time of each frame transforms the lights in the landscape into horizontal streaks (neon lights appear as dotted lines due to their flicker). These individual frames were extended by running the film through the contact printer several times to make a multiple-superimposition print, each time slipping the film along by one frame. This effectively slows the film down. Two years later I made a sound version of the film, using the lights to generate "optical sound" (details of this process are in my DVD/book Optical Sound Films 1971–2007).

버밍엄에서 런던으로 향하는 기차의 열린 창문에 카메라를 고정해 촬영했다. 타임랩스로 촬영하여, 실제 두 시간에 걸친 여정은 상영 시 두 분으로 압축된다. 각 프레임의 긴 노출 시간은 풍경 속의 빛을 수평으로 길게 늘어진 흔적으로 바꾸어 놓는다(네온사인은 깜빡임 때문에 점선처럼 보인다). 이후 필름을 콘택트 프린터에 여러 차례 통과시키며 매번 필름을 한 프레임씩 이동시켜 다중 중첩 인화를 만들었다. 이 과정은 결과적으로 영상의 움직임을 더욱 느리게 만든다. 2년 뒤에는 이 작품의 사운드 버전을 제작했는데, 풍경의 빛을 이용해 '광학 사운드(optical sound)'를 생성하였다(이 과정은 DVD/도서 『Optical sound Films 1971–2007』에 자세히 소개되어 있다).
