The movement of atoms is eternal. Thrown across space, either by their own weight or by the shock of other atoms, they float, until chance brings them together. Some of them cling together tightly, forming the hardest bodies. Others are more mobile and leave greater spaces between each other, making less dense bodies, air and light. Finally, there are those that couldn't gain access to any groupings and jump around uselessly like specks of dust that a ray of sunshine illuminates when penetrating a dark room.

원자의 운동은 영원하다. 자체의 무게 때문이든, 혹은 다른 원자들과의 충돌 때문이든, 허공을 가로질러 던져진 원자들은 우연히 서로 가까워질 때까지 떠돈다. 그중 어떤 것들은 서로에게 강력하게 달라붙는 데 성공하고, 가장 단단한 물체를 형성한다. 더 유동적인 다른 원자들은 서로 사이에 더 큰 간격을 남겨두며, 밀도가 덜한 물체인 공기와 빛을 구성한다. 마지막으로, 그 어떤 결합체에도 받아들여지지 못한 원자들이 존재한다. 이들은 어두운 방 안으로 스며든 한 줄기 햇빛에 비치는 먼지 알갱이들처럼 허공 속에서 부질없이 뒤흔들린다.
