Behind the Torchlight: Cinematic Spaces Redux (Select works from Experiments in Cinema)

This program is an homage to all the theaters that were forced to close during the global pandemic. For cinephiles around the world, these spaces, in all their variety, are sacred, magical and life affirming.

“Sitting in the dark, I often gaze up and into the light flowing out from a projection booth. The tango-like dance of smoke and dust captured in that radiant stream makes any psychotropic drug experience seem tame and insignificant. In my mind, this fantastic light show embodies the essence of a cinematic experience. On the contrary, most popular films, with their need to over explain plot lines and deliver flaccid narrative arcs, leave me weary and unfulfilled. But, in the projected light stream, amongst the pirouetting particles and dancing dust devils, lies the promise of real contact. For the moment we will set to the side what happens when the luminescent ‘money shot’ defiles the silver screen. This dynamic space filled with luscious in- betweenness offers the promise of a world still to be discovered, and one

not yet fully formed.”

《Behind the Torchlight: 영화적 공간들의 귀환》

이 프로그램은 세계적 팬데믹으로 인해 문을 닫아야 했던 모든 극장들에 바치는 헌사이다. 전 세계의 시네필들에게 이러한 공간들은 형태와 규모를 막론하고 신성하고 마법 같으며 삶을 긍정하게 만드는 장소들이다.
