Description

Stolen Movie - Armed with an S8 camera and sound-person, Craig Baldwin runs both recording devices continuously through single-take raids on a series of San Francisco “grind house” theaters. Rushing past box offices and through front lobbies, he captures the chance scenes and sounds on screen at the time, then flees out the rear exit doors to reunite with the reality of the street.

슈퍼 8 카메라로 무장하고 녹음 담당자를 대동한 채 크레이그 볼드윈은 샌프란시스코의 여러 ‘그라인드하우스(grindhouse)’ 극장을 단일 쇼트로 급습하며, 카메라와 녹음 장치를 계속 작동시킨다. 매표소와 로비를 재빨리 지나며 그는 그 순간 스크린에 비치고 있는 우연한 장면과 소리들을 포착한 뒤, 후문으로 달아나 거리의 현실과 다시 합류한다.

Bio

Craig Baldwin is a filmmaker and curator whose interests lie in archival retrieval and recombinatory forms of cinema, performance, and installation. Baldwin attended lectures by the experimental film-maker Bruce Connor during his studies at San Francisco State University. He studied the work of Dziga Vertov, John Heartfield, Robert Nelson, Paul Sharits and other artists who use “found” footage. He is the recipient of several grants, including those from the Rockefeller Foundation, Alpert Award, Creative Capital, Phelan, AFI, FAF, and California Arts Council. Over the last two decades, his productions have been shown and awarded at numerous international festivals, museums, and institutes of contemporary art, often in conjunction with panels, juries, and workshops on collage and cultural activism. His own weekly screening project, Other Cinema, has continued to premiere experimental, essay, and documentary works for over a quarter century.

크레이그 볼드윈은 아카이브의 발굴과 영화, 퍼포먼스, 설치 작업에서의 재조합적 형식에 관심을 두고 활동하는 영화감독이자 큐레이터이다. 샌프란시스코 주립대학교 재학 시절 그는 실험영화감독 브루스 코너의 강의를 들었으며, 지가 베르토프, 존 하트필드, 로버트 넬슨, 폴 샤리츠 등 ‘발견된(found) 영상’을 활용하는 예술가들의 작업을 연구했다.

그는 록펠러 재단, 알퍼트 어워드, 크리에이티브 캐피털, 펠런 재단, 미국영화연구소(AFI), FAF, 캘리포니아 예술위원회 등으로부터 여러 지원금을 받았다. 지난 20여 년 동안 그의 작품들은 수많은 국제 영화제와 미술관, 현대미술 기관에서 상영되고 수상했으며, 종종 콜라주와 문화적 행동주의에 관한 패널, 심사, 워크숍과 함께 소개되었다.

그가 직접 운영하는 주간 상영 프로젝트 Other Cinema는 25년이 넘는 시간 동안 실험영화, 에세이 영화, 다큐멘터리 작품들의 초연을 지속해오고 있다.
