“Who is afraid of ideology? Part 2” (2019) continues Marwa Arsanios' research into Jinwar, a women-only village in the north of Syria, and extend her work to a farming cooperative close to the Syrian border in the Lebanese Bekaa Valley. The Lebanese cooperative has created an informal, NGO-like structure that has become a safe space for Syrian refugee women. Through the prism of these two communities, the artist expands her investigation into the ways the land has been reappropriated by the autonomous movement in Rojava after 2011. Critiquing the top-down construction of state and party ideology, Arsanios’ study of feminist approaches to organizing a communal life with nature and non-human species proposes a way of decentralizing the role of the human mind as the primary actor in this process.

<이데올로기가 두려운가요? - 2부>는 마르와 아르사니오스가 시리아 북부에 위치한 ‘여성들의 땅’이라는 뜻의 마을 진와르(Jinwar)를 연구하면서 시작된 작업으로, 이후 시리아 국경과 가까운 레바논 베카 계곡의 농업 협동조합까지 범위를 확장한 작품이다. 이 협동조합은 NGO와 유사한 비공식 조직을 형성해 시리아 난민 여성들에게 안전한 공간을 제공하고 있다. 작가는 이 두 공동체를 통해 로자바 자치운동 이후 영토를 어떻게 재획득해왔는지를 탐색한다. 작품은 국가와 정당 중심의 이데올로기 구조를 비판하며, 자연과 비인간 존재들과의 공동체적 삶을 조직하는 페미니즘적 접근을 통해 인간 중심 사고를 탈중심화하는 가능성을 제시한다.

Marwa Arsanios lives and works in Berlin as an artist, filmmaker and researcher. Her work encompasses installation, performance and moving images. She reconsiders the political development of the second half of the twentieth century from a contemporary perspective, focusing on gender relations, collectivism, urbanism and industrialization. Her research work includes many disciplines and has been deployed in numerous collaborative projects. Several international solo exhibitions have been dedicated to her work, which has also been shown in various group exhibitions. Her films have been presented internationally in cinemas and at festivals. She has received several awards for her work. Arsanios is the co-founder of the 98weeks Research Project.

Marwa Arsanios is an artist from Beirut. Her practice tackles structural questions using different devices, forms and strategies. From architectural spaces, their transformation and adaptability throughout conflict, to artist-run spaces and temporary conventions between feminist communes and cooperatives, the practice tends to make space within and parallel to existing art structures allowing experimentation with different kinds of politics. Film becomes another form and a space for connecting struggles in the way images refer to each other.

In the past four years Arsanios has been attempting to think about these questions from a new materialist and a historical materialist perspective with different feminist movements that are struggling for their land. She tries to look at questions of property, law, economy and ecology from specific plots of land. The main protagonists become these lands and the people who work them.

Her research includes many disciplines and is deployed in numerous collective methodologies and collaborative projects.

마와 아사니오스는 베를린을 기반으로 활동하는 베이루트 출신의 예술가이자 영화감독, 연구자로서, 설치, 영상, 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 형식을 통해 20세기 후반의 정치적 흐름을 현대적 시선에서 재해석하고자 한다. 그녀는 특히 젠더 관계, 집산주의, 도시화, 산업화 등 구조적인 문제에 집중하며, 건축 공간의 변화, 예술가의 역할, 여성주의 협동조합의 가능성 등 공간과 권력의 상호작용을 탐색한다. 영화는 그녀에게 이미지와 투쟁을 연결하는 하나의 실천 도구로 기능하며, 이야기의 주체로 인간뿐 아니라 토지와 비인간 존재들을 함께 호명한다. 아사니오스는 다양한 학문 분야와 집단적 협업 방식을 넘나들며, 98weeks 리서치 프로젝트를 공동 설립하고, 최근 4년간에는 신물질주의와 역사적 유물론의 관점에서 땅과 생태, 법과 경제를 둘러싼 여성주의 운동과의 연대를 지속적으로 탐구해오고 있다. 그녀의 작업은 다수의 국제 전시와 영화제에서 상영 및 소개되었으며, 예술과 정치, 이론과 실천의 경계를 넘나들며 새로운 가능성을 모색한다.
