나는 초기영화사에 있어 기술적 발명과 영화의 탄생으로 이끈 동력으로서 장치의 개념에 대해 논하고자 한다. 이번 강연은 구체적 사례들을 바탕으로 한다. 우선, 80년대 초반에 만든 내 작품 중에서 <디스포지티브의 자화상>(1981)과 <홀론>(1981~1982) 을 다루게 될텐데, 나는 이 두 작품 제작을 위해 카메라 렌즈 앞에 수동으로 움직이는 셔터 장치를 만들었다. 프레임 사이에 구멍이 살짝 있는 스트립을 이 과정에서 사용했는데 조에트로프나 다른 영화 이전의 장치인 페나키스토스코프와 크게 다르지 않다. 다만 장치의 해체와 자기 반영이 개입되었다는 점이 중요하다.
We will discuss the notion of apparatus as a driving force for technical inventions and cinematographic works, related to the early cinema. The lecture will be based on concrete examples. First, I will examine my work, through two of my films made in the early 80s, Self-portrait with apparatus (1981) and Holon (1981~1982), and the specific device I created for them, which consists of adding another manual shutter in front of the camera lens. The slotted strip used in that process remind us of zoetropes and other pre-cinema phenakistoscopes. But the most important is the deconstruction and mirroring of the apparatus which are involved here.
