아시아의 대안적 영상문화와 실험영화의 역사 연구를 위해 마련된 아시아 포럼은 올해 방콕실험영화제와의 교류 프로그램을 통해 시암 시절의 태국 초기 영화부터 동시대 무빙 이미지 아티스트들의 실험적 작업까지, 태국 영상문화의 흐름을 조망한다. 특히 현대 섹션에서는 설치 형식으로 제작된 다섯 편의 작품을 EXiS 상영을 위해 단일 스크린 포맷으로 새롭게 구성해 선보인다. 이들 중 일부는 아피찻퐁 위라세타쿤의 VR 작업 <태양과의 대화>를 바탕으로 기획된 프로젝트며, 나머지는 ‘소멸’을 주제로 한 프로젝트에서 출발한 작업들이다. 각 작품은 장소성, 정체성, 그리고 전이적 소속감과 같은 주제를 매개로, 이미지와 사운드의 감각적 전환 가능성을 실험적으로 제시한다. 이번 행사에는 방콕실험영화제 큐레이터 메리가 내한하여 관객과 직접 소통하며, 태국 실험영화의 현재와 미래, 그리고 작품에 담긴 이야기를 나누는 특별한 시간을 마련한다.
Asia Forum is a section designed to study the history of alternative video culture and experimental cinema in Asia. This year, it features an exchange program with the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival, offering an overview of Thai video culture that spans from early Siam-era films to contemporary experimental works by moving image artists. In particular, the Contemporary section features five installation-based works newly reconfigured into single-screen formats for EXiS screenings. Some of these projects were conceived in dialogue with Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s VR work A Conversation with the Sun, while others originate from a project themed around DISSOLVING ROOM. Each work experimentally explores themes such as site-specificity, identity, and transitory belonging, proposing sensory transformations of image and sound. The event includes a special visit by Mary Pansanga, curator of the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival, who will engage directly with the audience to discuss the present and future of Thai experimental film and the stories behind the works.
