About the Program

The experimental impulse – the instinct to probe the limits of visual reality – was evident since the early days of cinema in Siam. This programme features five short films from the late 1920s and early 1930s preserved by the Thai Film Archive, including three works from the collection of the Topical Film Service (a film production outfit under the State Railways of Siam), one by a prince and one by King Rama VII, the film-loving monarch. The “experimental” elements of these films are both deliberate, fortuitous, and interpretative – from primitive optical effects that create simple cinematic wonders to an instinctive investigation into the relationship between the camera and its subject. Through the works of these pioneers, we have a glimpse of where, and how, experimental cinema took off in Thailand.

초기 태국 실험영화, 모든 것의 시작

시각적 현실의 경계를 탐구하려는 본능, 즉 ‘실험적인 충동’은 시암(Siam)의 초기 영화 시대부터 존재해왔습니다. 이번 프로그램은 1920년대 후반부터 1930년대 초반 사이 태국에서 제작된 희귀한 단편영화 다섯 편을 선보입니다. 이 작품들은 태국 영상자료원이 보존하고 있으며, 그중 세 편은 시암 국영철도 산하 영상 제작 부서인 토피컬 필름 서비스(Topical Film Service)에서 제작되었습니다. 나머지 두 편 중 한 편은 왕자에 의해, 또 한 편은 영화에 깊은 애정을 가진 군주로 잘 알려진 라마 7세 국왕이 직접 만든 작품입니다.

이 영화들이 실험적인 이유는 단지 의도적인 시도뿐 아니라, 우연한 순간과 다양한 해석의 가능성에서도 드러납니다. 원시적인 광학 효과, 피사체와 카메라 간의 즉흥적인 상호작용 등에서 우리는 초기 영화가 지녔던 경이로움과 새로운 시각 언어의 가능성을 엿볼 수 있습니다.

선구자들의 작업을 통해, 태국 실험영화가 어디서, 어떻게 시작되었는지를 다시금 들여다보게 됩니다.
