“Co-produced with Natsuyuki Nakanishi A found educational film about the sex of plants and animals was punched with big holes in almost every frame throughout the film by myself and an artist friend Natsuyuki Nakanishi who found the film in a garbage. At several points there are inserts of a few frames of a pornographic photo (which would work on a subliminal sense) in which the sex part was covered by black. The film is an irony and at the same time a protest against sex censorship in Japan at the time in which pornographic scenes had to be covered by black. At the end we even punched holes in these subliminal pictures, thereby "censoring" the censored image…” The work, which directly attacks both the film physically and the eyes of the audience, was Iimura's first film (according to the filmography) as well as the first master piece which relates to his later film works of conceptual-art." Bio

Takahiko Iimura (飯村隆彦, 1937-2022) was a pioneering experimental film director in Japan who presented works that experimented with the aesthetics and techniques of the medium across film, video, and performance. In the early 60s, he started making experimental films during the golden age of underground art in Japan and collaborated with avant-garde artists such as Yoko Ono, Genpei Akasegawa, Natsuyuki Nakanishi, and butoh dancer Tatsumi Hijikata. He also organized ‘Japan Film Independent’, Japan’s first experimental film festival. In the 1960s, he produced structuralist films and in the 1970s and 19080s, he focused on conceptual arts by actively using video media with an interest in the semiotics of video and its relationship to the viewer. Moreover, he continued to work in performance and installation art throughout his artistic career.

His film and video works have been screened at the MoMA Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum, the Anthology Film Archive, and Centre Georges-Pompidou, and critics have been published in Re:Voir in Paris and Lux in London. Director Takahiko Iimura passed away on July 31, 2022, and in 2023, a special exhibition looking at his art world was held at the Forum Expanded section of the Berlin International Film Festival and the Yebisu International Art Festival (hosted by the Tokyo Museum of Photography).

이이무라 타카히코 (Takahiko Iimura, 飯村隆彦, 1937~2022)는 일본의 선구적인 실험영화 감독으로 영화, 비디오, 퍼포먼스 분야 전반에 걸쳐 매체 고유의 특성과 기술을 실험하는 작품을 선보였다. 60년대 초 일본 언더그라운드 아트의 황금기에 실험영화를 만들기 시작했고 오노 요코, 아카세가와 겐페이, 나카니시 나츠유키, 그리고 부토 댄서 히지카타 타츠미와 같은 전위 예술가들과 교류했다. 또한 역사적으로 중요한 일본 최초의 실험영화 페스티벌인 ‘일본 영화 독립' ( Japan Film Independent)를 조직했다. 60년대에는 구조주의 영화를, 70년~80년대에는 영상의 기호학과 관객과의 관계에 관심을 가지고 비디오 매체를 적극적으로 탐구하면서 개념 미술을 선보였고, 예술 활동 전반에 걸쳐서 퍼포먼스 및 설치 분야에도 지속적으로 작업을 이어나갔다.

그의 영화 및 비디오 작품은 뉴욕 현대 미술관, 휘트니 미술관, 앤솔로지 영화 아카이브, 조르주 퐁피두 등에서 상영되었다. 이이무라 타카히코 감독은 2022년 7월 31일에 타계하였으며, 2023년 베를린 국제 영화제의 포럼 익스펜디드 섹션과 에비스 국제 예술 페스티벌 (도쿄 사진 미술관 주최)에서 그의 예술 세계를 살펴보는 기획전이 열렸다.
