혜정은 베를린의 한 서점에서 “코끼리가 도시에 왔을 때 When Elephants Come to Twon”라는 책을 보게 되었다. 그 중에 가장 눈길을 끈 것은 드럼 위에 올라가 완벽한 대칭을 이루며 서로 바라보고 있는 두 마리의 코끼리 사진. 이 한 장의 사진으로 혜정은 런던의 동물원으로 향한다. 360º 카메라를 활용하여 새로운 중심점에서 내러티브를 구성한다:

다른 생물들, 인종들, 그리고 민족들에 대한 이 계속되는 잔혹성의 역사는 언제 시작되었는가?

얼마나 많은 사람들이 이름없이 죽었는가?

왜 이 첼시에 코끼리 무리가 나타났을까?

오늘날 우리의 언어는 식민지의 산물이다. 베를린으로 돌아온 혜정은 자신은 이 식민지 매트릭스의 권력에 대한 불규칙이라는 결론을 내린다.

런던의 이민자들의 장터, 이스트 스트릿 마켓에서부터 영국의 자랑 점보 이야기, 베를린의 훔볼트 포럼Humboldt Forum까지 아울러 4개의 챕터로 구성되어있다. 엘리펀트&캐슬로 이주하는 과정에서 보여주는 현대적 형태의 인종차별에 대한 고찰과, 과거 대 항해로 시작된 인류의 잔혹한 식민 지배 행위를 대조한다. 한스 슬론Hans Sloane경의 영국 박물관의 약탈된 아프리카의 유물 베닌 브론즈에 관한 이야기와 현대 베를린의 탈식민지화 논쟁을 멀티레이어드된 파운드 푸티지Found-Footage와360º 이미지들의 요소들로 병치하였다. 작가는 이미지와 사운드 콜라주를 통하여 식민지 매트릭스의 연속성에 대하여 질문한다.

Hyejeong saw a book called "When Elephants Come to Town" at a bookstore in Berlin. One of the most eye-catching pictures in the book is two elephants climbing on a drum and looking at each other in perfect symmetry. In this one picture, Hyejeong wants to visit the zoo in London.

Using 360-degree cameras to construct narratives, she found a new central point for her work: When did the ongoing history of brutality against other creatures, species, and ethnicities start?

How many people died without a name?

Why has a herd of elephants appeared in Chelsea?

Our languages today are a product of colonisation.

Returning to Berlin, Hyejeong concludes that she is an irregularity in the power of the colonial matrix.

The film "When Elephants Come to Town" is heavily defined by its rhythm. Hyejeong Yun frees themselves from linear narrative structures and chooses a subject-centric narrative out of multimedia-based documentary methods. From this, Hyejeong combines their own experiences and observations with found footage film and collective euro-centric myths. – everyday experiences and institutionalised balances of power – In these connections, she is creating multi-sensory collages of photography, sound and film.

윤혜정(*1991) 작가는 대한민국 출신의 멀티미디어 아티스트로 2015년부터 독일에 거주하고 있습니다.

그녀의 작품은 문화, 인종, 권력에 대한 현대의 대중적 논쟁을 반영하고 있으며 포스트 식민주의, 이민, 정체성에 대한 이야기를 풀어냅니다. 윤혜정 작가는 최근 다큐멘터리 단편영화, 비디오, 설치미술, 디지털 인터랙티브 애니메이션, 퍼포먼스 등으로 사회를 조사하고 종종 간과되는 것을 관찰하며, 또 현대 사회에 의문을 제기합니다.

Yun Hye (*1991) is a multimedia artist from South Korea and has been living in Germany since 2015.

Her work is reflective of contemporary public debates about culture, race and power and is informed by post-colonialism, stories of immigration and identity. In her latest videos, installations and interactive digital works, she investigates her surroundings, observing what is often overlooked, and questions our modern society.
