Description of work

'내가 모르는 특정한 중국'는 18세기에 유행했던 중국의 모티브를 모방한 유럽의 장식 양식인 시노아세리에 대한 식민지 이후의 반응이다. 조지 4세가 착각을 바탕으로 지은 영국 유원지 브라이튼(Royal Pavilion Brighton)을 배경으로 하고 있으며, 따라서 내부는 전체적으로 시노아세리이다.

‘This is China of a particular sort, I do not know’ is a postcolonial response to chinoiserie, a European decorative style imitating Chinese motifs popular in the eighteenth century. It is set and entirely filmed at the Royal Pavilion Brighton, a British pleasure palace built by George IV based on the idea of illusion, and hence its interior being entirely chinoiserie. 

다섯 번의 대화와 한 번의 독백에 걸쳐 작가 자신과 관련 역사적 인물들 - 영국 국왕 조지 4세, 매카트니 대사관을 접견한 중국 황제 친룽, 초대 중국 대사관을 이끈 조지 매카트니, 대사관의 윌리엄 알렉산더, 그리고 초나라 왕족 안나 그리고 안나 칭 다이너스티 왕족이자 화가의 어릴 적 이웃인 대만 파빌리온(Pavilion)의 중국식 표현에 대해 서로 질문하고 그리워하고 논쟁하고 반대한다.

Across five dialogues and one monologue, the artist herself and relevant historical individuals – that are George IV the British King, Chien-lung the Chinese Emperor who received the Macartney Embassy, George Macartney who led the first British embassy to China, William Alexander the draughtsman from the embassy, and Ann a Ching Dynasty royal family member and also the artist’s childhood neighbour in Taiwan – question, miss, argue and disagree with each other over the representation of Chineseness in chinoiserie at the Pavilion.
