<마지날리아>는 급변하는 환경 속 사회의 상태와 위치를 회색의 음영과 변화하는 색상을 통해 살펴본다. 이는 가장자리에서 본 풍경이며 또한 제목에서 시사하듯 우리가 공유하고 있는 상황 속 주변부에 대한 구구절절한 설명이기도 하다. 영화는 아직 알 수 없는 어떤 것의 탄생에 길을 내주기 위해 가뭇없이 사라지는 것들로 가득하다. 

 지금까지 나온 내 영화와 마찬가지로 <마지날리아>는 무성영화이다. 앞에서 한 설명이 이 영화를 제대로 읽은 것이라 생각하면 곤란하다. 이미지들은 그저 흘러갈 뿐 전혀 목적의식이 없다. 단지 관객의 눈과 정신에 닿으려 할 뿐이다. 감독이 무얼 말하려 했는지 이해하려 애쓸 것도 없다. 시적인 영화를 보고 있는 대부분의 사람들은 주변부가 의미하는 바에 꽤 익숙할 터이다. 

MARGINALIA is a contemplation in shades of grey and periodic color on the state and place of society in a quickly changing environment. It could be seen as a view from the margins. Or, as its title suggests, it might be expostulatory comments on the page-edge of our shared circumstances. Its air is filled with things slipping away to make way for an as yet unknown birth. 

As with my films, so far, MARGINALIA is silent. The above description should not be considered the correct reading of the film. Images simply flow by and are not at all laden with purpose other than to connect with the viewer's sight and mind. Be unburdened with thoughts of understanding what the filmmaker is trying to say. Most people who find themselves watching poetic films are pretty familiar with what marginal means.
