당밀(점성이 높은 설탕 생산의 부산물)을 이용한 '블랙 리버'는 설탕 재배, 과잉, 그리고 17세기 영국의 설탕에 대한 자본주의적 욕구가 대서양을 횡단하는 노예 무역 기간 동안 아프리카인들의 강제 이주와 노예 노동을 어떻게 부채질 했는지에 대한 탐구이다. 대영제국의 역사와 식민지 자메이카의 대립 속에서 이 작가는 당밀의 물리적, 형이상학적 특성을 탐색하고 그것이 어떻게 그녀의 조상들의 유산에 각인될 수 있는지를 표현하려고 한다.

Using molasses (an abundant and viscous by-product of sugar production), 'Black River' is an exploration into sugar cultivation, excess, and how capitalist desire for sugar in 17th century Britain fuelled forced migration and enslaved labour of African people to the islands of the Caribbean, during the Transatlantic slave trade. A confrontation of the history of the British empire and its colonial ties to Jamaica, the artist attempts to explore the physical and metaphysical properties of the molasses, and articulate how it may imprint on her own ancestral heritage.
