사미족(Sámi people)은 시간을 축적한 땅이자 혹독한 기후조건으로 오랜 시간 지리적으로 고립되어 온 북유럽 극지방의 토착민이다. 현재에 이르러 소수 그룹으로 살아가는 사미족의 전통적인 생활방식과 그들만의 정체성은 현대적 시스템과의 갈등을 필연적으로 불러 일으킨다. 사미족이자 라플란드에서 평생을 살아온 아니타 김발(Anita Gimvall)에게 최근에 일어난 전통가옥 방화사건이 그 단면을 보여주는데 존재하지 않는 것을 향한 북쪽에서는 실제 인물의 사건을 토대로 과거의 전통과 현대적 삶의 모호한 경계에서 벌어지는 갈등과 소외, 정착과 추방, 사유와 공유, 내부와 외부의 모호해진 경계와 배경의 이야기들을 추적해 나간다. 인포그래픽의 형식을 차용한 영상 위로 합성된 기계음의 나레이터(Heather)가 담담히 전달하는 북극지방의 지리적 요소, 사미족의 풍속, 전통, 자연 환경에 관한 백과 사전적 지식은 5개의 챕터에 나뉘어져 소개함으로써 실제 경험에 앞서 인터넷과 미디어로 세계를 이해하는 현대인들을 풍자함과 동시에 실제로 촬영된 다큐멘터리 로케이션 영상, 파운드 푸티지, 사운드 그리고 랜드 스케이프 비율의 가로로 긴 영상으로 통해 인지하는 풍경 너머의 삶의 복잡성과 부조리에 관해 이야기하고자 한다.
전작인 <열망으로의 접근>과 <보이지 않는 존재를 향한 북쪽>의 두 작업에서는 역사를 바탕으로 한 사회, 정치, 경제, 지리, 인류학적 이동과 움직임에 관한 다양한 이야기들을 다룬다. <열망으로의 접근>에서는 더 나은 삶을 위해 자신의 모국을 떠나 다른 영토로 떠나야만 했던 이들의 안과 밖을 둘러싸고 있는 제도 혹은 국가적 거래와 같은 저항할 수 없는 시스템에 의한 개인적 열망의 실현을 위한 적극적인 이주, 이동에 관해 과거에서 현재까지 이어져 오는 시간을 묘사했다면 <존재하지 않는 것을 향한 북쪽>에서는 과거로부터 단 한번도 자신의 땅을 떠나지 않은 이들이 맞이하고 있는 새로운 현재가 전통과 현대라는 극명하지만 동시에 또한 모호한 경계지대에서 벌어지는 갈등으로 비롯되는 추방과 소외, 고립에 관한 이야기를 다루고 있다. 그럼으로 우리가 직면하는 현재의 원형이 과거의 역사에서 비롯되는 순환적 관계에 놓여 있음을 암시하고자 한다.

To the North for Nonexistence, a single-channel video with the background of the Lapland region bordering northern Sweden, Norway, and Finland is being screened. Lapland, located in the polar region of northern Europe, is home to the Sámi people who are the only indigenous people having settled there, adapting to the extreme cold and natural environment for centuries. They have been self-sufficient, relying on the traditional way of living including hunting and raising reindeers. But these days, with the number of reindeers dwindling, the majority of its population is moving towards modern life, after suffering from the challenges of living a traditional lifestyle and confusion of identity resulting from the advancement of technologies and civilizations.
To the North for Nonexistence talks about a story of conflicts and the underlying marginalization taking place at the vague boundaries that show stark contrast between tradition and modernity, across a total of 5 chapters “Letter from Anita”,“To the North”,“The Land of Time”,“Exile”,“The Death of the Sun’s Daughter” based on a personal story of a member of the minority Sámi, Anita Gimvall. The video starts with the voice of Anita inadvertently flowing out from a running car, through which the audience learns about an arson case of a traditional Sami house Kåta that happened to her. In fact, Anita had preserved the Kåta renovated for the purpose of dwelling and living, to pass down the traditions and culture of the Sámi people to the grandchildren for the past 120 years, but with the redevelopment plan to build a wind farm near the Scandinavian mountains where the Kåta was located, conflicts with the government were inevitable. Unlike the previous work Proximity of Longing featuring migrants who leave their homeland for a new territory that will (or seems to) promise a better life, To the North for Nonexistence talks about the stories of those who face the coming new present-future that approaches a territory whose time had piled up for long from the past to the present. The Sámi people, represented by Anita , had never left their territory in their life. The encyclopedic information of the geography, topography, climate and other natural environment of the Northern polar region and the customs and traditions of the Sámi people are indifferently describedbased on the objective facts, via infographics screens using found footages and mechanical voice of a narrator, even several shocking events or elements related to colonialism and imperialism conflicts, deportation, migration, discrimination and mistreat-ment having occurred throughout the Sámi people’s history. The last chapter of the video whose title comes from the Sámi people’s poem “The Death of the Sun’s Daughter” enumerates detailed events in chronological order that Anita went through before coming to an end, adding another chapter to the Sámi people’s history.
