나는 이 영상의 제작을 위해 대만 최초의 결합 쌍생아 신체의 섬유유리 주물을 제작하고 디지털 스캔 모델을 만들었다. 이 과정을 통해서 나는 기억의 기능과 생물학적 작용을 탐구하고자 했다. 대만의 첫 결합 쌍둥이는 1979년 분리수술을 받았고, 이 모든 과정이 텔레비전을 통해 방송되었다. 당시 대만은 계엄령 하에 있었으며, 당시 그 수술은 종종 대만과 중국의 관계를 비유한 것으로 해석되었다. 1979년 분리수술을 준비하기 위해서 병원측은 결합 쌍둥이의 주형을 만들기 위해 한 예술가를 초대했다. 이러한 시도는 쌍둥이를 통제하는 것의 어려움으로 인해 제대로 된 주형을 만들 수 없어 성공적이지 못했다.
<싱글 카피> 프로젝트에서 나는 현재 43세인 장충이의 신체를 다시 모델링하고, 그의 신체를 기록에 남기기 위해 3D 스캐닝 기술을 사용했다. 기록보관소의 자료는 장씨의 어린 시절의 기억을 포착하는데 사용되었다. 장씨는 21살에 <폴링 업 웨이킹 다운>이라는 영화에서 개조된 낡은 버스안에 가게를 둔 찻집 주인 역을 연기했다. 20년이 지난 지금 장씨는 43세의 나이에 자주 그 때의 찻집을 운영하면 어떨까 하는 생각을 했다. 실제 그의 삶에서 그는 현재 결혼 해 두 명의 아이와 함께 살고 있다. 이 작품에서는 결합 쌍생아와 관련된 생물학적 기억으로 부터 출발해 장씨의 현재의 삶과 허구적 배경을 함께 다룬다.

I produced a digital-scan model and fiberglass cast of the body of the first Taiwanese conjoined twins. Through this process, I attempt to explore the workings of biopolitics and the functioning of one’s memory. The first conjoined twins underwent separation surgery in 1979 and the whole procedure was broadcast on TV. During that period, Taiwan was under martial law. In this way, this surgery was often interpreted as a metaphor for the relationship between Taiwan and China.
Back in 1979, in order to prepare for the separation surgery, the hospital invited an artist to make a cast of the conjoined twins. The attempt to make a cast was however unsuccessful, since it was difficult to control the babies during the moulding process.
In this project Single Copy, I have re-casted the body of the now 43-year old Chang Chung-I, and also use 3D scanning technology to archive his body. The data from the archive are then used as sources for capturing memories from Chang’s earlier life. When Chang was 21 years old, he played a role in the movie, Falling Up Waking Down, portraying a tea shop owner whose shop was inside a converted old bus. About two decades later, Chang is now 43 years old, and he has repeatedly thought about what it would be like to run that old bus-converted teashop. In real life, Chang is married with two kids, and this artwork overlaps his present life with the fictional setting.
