확장되는 느낌, 펼쳐지는 변곡들-영원히 변주되고, 변화가 끊이지 않는.
난 한동안 사랑에 관한 작품을 만들고 싶었는데, 그래서인지 난 흑인 페미니스트 이론가인 벨 훅스의 ≪사랑에 관한 모든 것/올 어바웃 러브≫를 읽고 있었다. 후크의 책 도입부에서 그녀는 사랑은(예술, 음악, 영화, 문학, 철학) 주로 남자들에 의해 정의되었다고 말한다. 심지어 현대 대중문화에서 조차, 여성들은 실제로 무언가 정의내리지 못했고 그들은 주로 받거나 반응하는 쪽에 있었다. 그래서 이 영화는 사랑을 해석하려는 나의 시도라 할 수 있다. 내가 던진 답이 꼭 이 영화 속에 분명하게 드러나지는 않지만 사랑은 새로운 내면의 공간을 열고, 가능성을 초대하며, 변화와 관대함, 그리고 인간의 성장을 가능하게 한다. 벨 훅스가 한 말을 즉흥적으로 다시 표현해 본다면 “사랑은 선택이고, 정치적 행동이며, 배워야 하는 것”이다. 여기에 내가 덧붙이고 싶은 말은 “사랑은 또한 일이며, 정말 많은 감정적 노동의 결과”라는 것이다.

An expanding feeling, unfolding new inflections — forever different, forever changing.
I had been wanting to make work about love for a while, which is probably why I was reading bell hooks’ ≪All About Love≫. In the beginning of the book hooks say that love had (in art, music, films, literature, philosophy) predominantly been defined by men. That even in contemporary pop culture, women didn't really get to define things, that they were more on the receiving or responding side. So this film is my attempt at interpreting love. My take, and this is not necessarily explicitly in the film, is,  that love opens new internal spaces, invites possibilities––and allows for change, generosity, and human growth. And I'll improvise on what Bell Hooks said: love is a choice, love is a political act, and love needs to be learned. To that I want to add, that love is also work; it can be a lot of emotional labor.
