칠레 북부와 아르헨티나 북서부의 안데스 산맥에서 촬영된 이 작품은 소금 호수와 화산 사막, 그리고 독특한 색깔을 띤 호수들을 담고 있다. 대지와 하늘, 낮과 밤, 심장박동과 산, 광물과 구름을 융합시켜서 눈부신 푸른 태양이 영원히 핏빛 달을 영원히 위협하는, 진동하는 풍경을 드러낸다. 화산, 간헐천, 칠레 청색 고래 등을 인프라사운드 레코딩* 방식으로 녹음하여 생성된 사운드스케이프와 결합된 영상은 인카메라 편집을 활용하여 색상과 형태가 충돌시킬 때 발생하는 시각적 리듬을 드러낸다. 풍경은 복잡한 16mm 기법을 사용하여 변형되어서 맥동하고 불규칙하게 반복된다. 오랫동안 초석과 질산염 채굴활동과 최근에는 지열개발에 의해 위협을 받고 있는 자연생태계의 한 가운데에서 만들어진 이 작품은 살아남은 고대의 땅을 모두가 목격할 수 있도록 드러낸다.
Filmed in the Andean Mountains in the traditional lands of the Atacameño, Aymara, and Calchaquí-Diaguita in Northern Chile and Northwest Argentina, ALTIPLANO takes place within a geological universe of ancestral salt flats, volcanic deserts, and colored lakes. Fusing earth with sky, a day with night, heartbeat with mountain, and mineral with the iridescent cloud, ALTIPLANO reveals a vibrating landscape in which a bright blue sun forever threatens to eclipse a blood-red moon. Coupled with a soundscape generated from infrasound recordings of volcanoes, geysers, Chilean blue whales, and more, ALTIPLANO makes use of in-camera editing to create evocative visual rhythms through the clash of color and form. Landscapes pulse and stutter, transformed through complex 16mm pixelation and superimposition techniques into spaces that exist in a multitude of times simultaneously. Located at the heart of a natural ecosystem threatened by a century of saltpeter and nitrate mining practices, and recent geothermic exploitation, ALTIPLANO reveals an ancient land standing witness to all that is, was, and will be.

말레나 슬람은 칠레 출신의 아티스트이자 영화작가로 영화, 설치, 퍼포먼스를 결합한 작품을 제작하고 있다. 그녀의 작품은 자연세계와 인간의 지각, 그리고 직관적인 과정의 관계를 탐구한다. 시간기반 작품을 통해 구축된 시학과 인-카메라 작법은 아날로그 필름 작업의 물질적이고 감응적인 차원을 드러낸다. 그녀의 작품은 로테르담, 토론토, 뉴욕, 에딘버러, 미디어 시티, 마르 델 플라타, 홍콩 영화제 등에서 상영되었으며, 로스엔젤레스 필름포럼, 샌프란시스코 시네마테크 등에서 솔로 상영된 바 있다. 그녀의 최근 작은 토론토 국제영화제에서 프리미어 상영되었으며, 2018년 캐나다 단편 영화 10선에 선정되기도 했다. 현재 그녀는 몬트리얼에 거주하고 있으며 실험영화 독립아티스트 콜렉티브인 더블 네거티브의 멤버이기도 하다.
Born in Chile, Malena Szlam is an artist and filmmaker working at the intersection of cinema, installation, and performance. Her practice explores the relationship between the natural world, perception, and intuitive process. The poetics developed through her time-based works and in-camera films engage the material and affective dimensions of analogue film practice. Szlam currently resides in Montreal and is a member of Double Negative, an independent artists' collective dedicated to the production and exhibition of experimental cinema.
