실험영화사에서 뛰어난 미학적 성취를 이룬 작가를 선정하여 회고전 형식으로 소개하는 프로그램으로, 실험영화의 역사와 동시대적 의미를 함께 가늠해 볼 수 있다. 기획 방향에 따라 영화 단체나 매체의 역사를 회고하는 프로그램을 기획하기도 한다. 2026년에는 프랑스의 대표적인 실험영화 감독 장 클로드 루소의 대표작부터 최근 디지털 작업까지 폭넓게 아우르는 회고전을 선보이며, 감독이 직접 한국을 방문한다. 이는 2003년 전주국제영화제 이후 23년 만의 내한으로, 본 회고전은 국립현대미술관 서울 영상관과의 협력으로 진행된다.
EX-Retro presents retrospectives of filmmakers who have achieved significant aesthetic accomplishments in the history of experimental film, offering a space to reflect on the history of experimental cinema and its contemporary relevance. Depending on its curatorial focus, the program may also take the form of a retrospective centered on a film collective or a particular medium. In 2026, EXiS presents a retrospective spanning the key works and recent digital practice of Jean-Claude Rousseau, one of France's foremost experimental filmmakers. Rousseau will visit Korea in person - his first visit since the 2003 Jeonju International Film Festival, marking a return after 23 years. The retrospective is presented in collaboration with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (MMCA Seoul), Film & Video.

장 클로드 루소는 1983년부터 활동해온 프랑스의 영화작가다. 슈퍼8 필름으로 시작해 2000년대 이후 디지털 비디오로 이행한 그의 작업은 40여 년에 걸쳐 일관된 방법론을 유지해왔다. 미리 준비된 주제도 시나리오도 없이, 자기 자신과 주변의 사물들, 머물거나 스쳐 지나가는 장소들에서 영화를 시작하는 루소에게 영화란 탐색이 아니라 발견이다. 짧은 컷과 움직이는 카메라 대신 지속과 고정을 선택하는 그의 작업은 절제된 형식 안에서 움직임, 시간, 색, 빛의 신비를 탐구한다.
로카르노 국제영화제, 마르세유 국제다큐멘터리영화제(FIDMarseille), 시네마 뒤 레엘 등 주요 영화제에서 지속적으로 소개되어 왔으며, 벨포르영화제 다큐멘터리 대상(1999)과 FIDMarseille 국제경쟁 대상(2007)을 수상한 바 있다. 2001년 베니스비엔날레를 시작으로 리스본, 로마, 교토 등지에서 전작 회고전이 이어져 왔으며, 최근에는 뉴욕 앤솔로지 필름 아카이브를 비롯한 미국 주요 기관에서도 그의 작업이 소개되고 있다.
2026년 서울국제실험영화페스티벌EXiS 및 국립현대미술관 서울 필름앤비디오 초청은 전주국제영화제 참여(2003) 이후 23년 만에 이루어지는 감독의 첫 내한이며, 이번 회고전은 그가 직접 관객과 마주하는 자리라는 점에서 각별하다.
Jean-Claude Rousseau has been active as a French filmmaker since 1983. Beginning with Super 8 film and moving into digital video from the 2000s onward, his work has sustained a remarkably consistent methodology across more than four decades. Rousseau begins his films without a predetermined subject or script, starting instead from himself, the objects around him, and the places where he lingers or merely passes through - for him, cinema is not a search but a discovery. Choosing duration over the short cut and stillness over the moving camera, his work explores the mysteries of movement, time, color, and light within a restrained formal language.
His films have been regularly presented at major festivals including Locarno, FIDMarseille, and Cinéma du réel, and he has received the Documentary Grand Prize at the Belfort Film Festival (1999) and the International Competition Grand Prize at FIDMarseille (2007). Since a full retrospective at the Venice Biennale in 2001, his complete body of work has been rediscovered through retrospectives in Lisbon, Rome, and Kyoto, among other cities, and more recently his films have been presented at major American institutions including Anthology Film Archives in New York.
His 2026 invitation to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art's Film & Video and to Experimental Film and Video Festival in Seoul (EXiS) marks the director's first visit to Korea in 23 years, since his participation in the Jeonju International Film Festival in 2003 and this retrospective is distinguished, above all, by his presence in person before the audience.
