Description

In 2012, Mohamed had witnessed his best friend gunned down by an armed militia on the outskirts of Damascus, Syria; the blood spilled into the lake contaminated his memory. Ten years later, the reflections on the Laurentian waters brings back Mohamed's traume. I asked him if he'd like to dig out the memories, to repair the pain by retreating for a few days into the most distressing calm possible for him. He tells us about death, immigration and anger. We wonder how and why we should tell this story.

2012년, 모하메드는 시리아 다마스쿠스 외곽에서 무장 민병대에 의해 친구가 총에 맞아 죽는 장면을 목격했다. 피는 호수로 흘러들어갔고, 그날의 기억은 오염된 채 그의 안에 남아있다. 10년이 지난 지금, 로렌시아 호수에 비친 물빛이 그날의 기억을 다시 떠오르게 한다. 나는 그에게 며칠 동안 가장 고요하면서도 고통스러운 장소로 들어가 그 기억을 다시 마주하고, 아픔을 들춰 치유할 수 있지 않겠느냐고 물었다. 그는 우리에게 죽음과, 이주, 분노에 대해 들려준다. 그리고 우리는 이 이야기를 어떻게, 왜 꺼내야 하는지를 함께 고민하게 된다.

Bio

Samy Benammar is a Montreal-based artist and film critic. His work as a writer and filmmaker has developed as a form of experimentation around socio-political issues inherited from his Algerian and working-class origins. His films include Adieu Ugarit (2024), Avant Seriana (2024), kaua'i'o'o (2023), and peugeot pulmonaire (2021). They have been shown in festivals such as Prismatic Groung, BFI London festival, RIDM and are distributed by Winnipeg Film Group, Vidéographe and CFMDC. His writings can be read in magazines such as Hors Champs, 24 images and Panorama cinéma. He is also conducting a PhD in research and creation focusing on the Wilaya of Batna, Algeria, and colonial photography. He listens to the bleating of the goat. No matter how domesticated, they remain unpredictable, and resist docility.

사미 베나마르는 캐나다 몬트리올에서 활동하는 예술가이자 영화 평론가다. 작가이자 영화감독이기도 한 그의 작품은 알제리 출신과 노동계급 출신으로부터 물려받은 사회정치적 이슈에 대한 실험의 한 형태로 발전해 왔다. 주요 작품으로는 <아방 세리아나>(2024), <카우아이오오>(2023) 등이 있으며, 이 작품들은 프리즘그라운드, BFI 런던 영화제, RIDM 등에서 상영되었다. 또한 Hors Champs, 24 images, Panorama cinéma 등의 잡지에 비평글을 기고하고 있으며, 현재 알제리 바트나 주와 식민지 사진에 관한 연구 박사 과정을 밟고 있다.
