Description

Drawing on a location test filmed in Uganda and an email exchange with the location scout, The Recce captures cinema’s ties to land and its entanglement with colonial imaginaries, binding the fiction of filmmaking with the fiction of state-building.

우간다에서 촬영된 로케이션 답사 영상과 로케이션 스카우터와 주고받은 이메일 내용을 바탕으로 한 <답사>는 영화가 땅과 맺고 있는 관계, 그리고 식민지적 상상력과의 얽힘을 포착한다. 이를 통해 영화 제작이라는 픽션과 국가 건설이라는 픽션을 하나로 묶어낸다.

Bio

Daniel Mann is a London-based filmmaker and writer. His feature films have been screened at the Berlinale, the Rotterdam Film Festival, Cinema du Réel, DOC NYC, the Hong Kong Film Festival, Documenta Madrid, DocLisboa, Visions du Réel, and the ICA in London. Mann is the author of Occupying Habits: Media as Warfare in Israel\Palestine (Bloomsbury, 2023), as well as several essays and peer-reviewed articles. His current book project, titled Hot Locations: Cinema on the Planetary Frontier (forthcoming with UC Press in 2026), explores the neocolonial economy of desert film locations and the material politics that connect cinema and hyper-arid lands. Mann was a fellow at the Camargo Foundation and is now a part of the film studies faculty at King's College London.

다니엘 만은 런던을 기반으로 활동하는 영화감독이자 작가다. 그의 장편 영화들은 베를린 국제영화제, 로테르담 국제영화제, 시네마 뒤 릴(Cinéma du Réel), 뉴욕 다큐멘터리 영화제(DOC NYC), 홍콩 국제영화제, 도큐멘타 마드리드, 독리스보아(DocLisboa), 비종 뒤 릴(Visions du Réel), 런던 현대예술인스티튜트(ICA) 등에서 상영되었다. 저서로는『점령의 습관: 이스라엘-팔레스타인 전쟁으로서의 미디어』(블룸스버리, 2023)가 있으며, 다수의 에세이와 피어리뷰(동료평가) 논문을 발표했다. 현재는 사막 영화 로케이션의 신식민주의 경제학과 영화 및 초건조 지역을 연결하는 물질 정치학을 탐구하는 도서 프로젝트 『핫 로케이션: 행성적 개척지의 영화』(2026년 캘리포니아 대학교 출판부 출간 예정)를 작업 중이다. 카마르고 재단 펠로우를 거쳐, 현재 킹스 칼리지 런던 영화학과 교수로 재직하고 있다.
