Description

All images in this work (entirely made of stills) are put together intuitively. They are not bound by rules or a script, but captured and edited spontaneously. The idea of a collective unconscious lies at the basis of this work.

While capturing extreme close-ups from his fingers, Cho found that for sharp focus, stills are much better than moving video images. So, for this video he worked like a stop motion picture. Separately and by chance, he found damaged images of Nirvana performance from a borrowed  library dvd. He felt those distorted images to be unusually powerful. He photographed the damaged images frame by frame with distorted sound, and inserted these in the video. His fingers suggested the Buddhist ritual for Nirvana - free from the endless circle, reincarnation.

이 작품의 모든 이미지(전체가 스틸로 제작됨)는 직관적으로 구성되어 있다. 규칙이나 스크립트에 얽매이지 않고 자연스럽게 캡처되고 편집되었다. 집단 무의식이라는 개념이 이 작품의 기초에 놓여 있다.

극단적인 클로즈업을 촬영하면서 작가는 선명한 초점을 위해서는 움직이는 비디오 이미지보다 정지 이미지가 훨씬 낫다는 것을 발견했다. 그래서 이번 영상에서 그는 스톱모션 사진처럼 작업을 진행했다. 이와는 별도로 우연히 그는 도서관에서 대여한 DVD에서 너바나 공연의 손상된 이미지를 발견했다. 그는 그 왜곡된 이미지가 유난히 강력하다고 느꼈다. 그는 손상된 이미지를 왜곡된 소리와 함께 프레임 단위로 촬영하여 영상에 삽입하였다. 그의 손가락은 끝없는 순환, 환생에서 벗어난, 일종의 열반을 위한 불교 의식을 제안했다.

Cho Seoungho was born in 1959 in Pusan, South Korea, and currently lives and works in New York. He received a BA and a MA in graphic arts from Hongik University in Seoul, and a MA in video art from NYU. He uses digital image processing techniques to manipulate simple, everyday objects, scenes or landscapes into highly lyrical sound and image collages.

조승호는 1959년 대한민국 부산에서 태어나 현재 뉴욕에 거주하며 작업하고 있다. 그는 홍익대학교에서 그래픽 아트로 학사 및 석사 학위를, 뉴욕 대학교에서 비디오 아트로 석사 학위를 받았다. 그는 디지털 이미지 처리 기술을 사용하여 단순하고 일상적인 사물, 장면 또는 풍경을 매우 서정적인 사운드와 이미지 콜라주로 변환시킨다.
