Description

The refracted gaze on Mianhua Islet, Taiwan's eastern de facto border, turns the concrete landscape of physical territory into a mirage of politics and topography. The fragmented image of the frontier reflects the ambivalent state of Taiwanese subjectivity. The camera slowly sweeps over the contour of the islet as if touching the country's body to ensure its existence. The ever-imaginary border that eludes, obscures, and fictionalizes the construction of a nation confronts us with its external mirrored image, as a subject and as a site, where the process and paradox of forming national subjectivity are materialized, embodied, and caught in a liminal space.

대만의 실질적인 동쪽 국경인 면화도를 향한 굴절된 시선은 물리적 영토라는 구체적인 풍경을 정치와 지형학의 신기루로 탈바꿈시킨다. 이 국경의 파편화된 이미지는 대만인 주체성의 양가적인 상태를 반영한다. 사뭇 국가의 신체를 어루만져 그 존재를 확인하려는 듯, 카메라는 섬의 윤곽을 천천히 훑고 지나간다. 국가라는 구조물을 회피하고, 모호하게 만들며, 허구화하는 늘 상상 속의 국경은 우리로 하여금 주체이자 장소로서의 외부 거울상(mirrored image)과 마주하게 한다. 그리고 그곳에서 국가적 주체성을 형성하는 과정과 역설은 구체화되고 체화되며, 리미널 스페이스(임계 공간)에 사로잡힌다.

Bio

Hsin-Yu Chen is a filmmaker and artist from Taipei, Taiwan. He draws on border landscapes, embodied knowledge, and the notion of measurement and categorization to examine the intersection of the viewing body and the political subject.

His work has been shown in group exhibitions and festivals, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei; Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition, Hong-gah Museum; Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin; Proyector – Festival de Videoarte; Image Forum Festival; Kassel Dokfest; 25 FPS; and Arkipel. He received the Barbara Aronofsky Latham Award for an Emerging Experimental Video Artist at the 2025 Ann Arbor Film Festival. He has participated in FIDCampus, Oberhausen Seminar, and residencies including RAIR Philadelphia, Cité Internationale des Arts, and Braunschweig Projects 2025/2026.

천신위는 대만 타이베이 출신의 영화감독이자 예술가다. 국경의 풍경, 체화된 지식, 그리고 측정과 분류의 개념을 활용하여 바라보는 신체와 정치적 주체의 교차점을 조사한다.

그의 작품은 타이베이 현대미술관(MOCA Taipei), 홍가 미술관의 대만 국제 비디오 아트 전시회, 랑콩트르 파리/베를린, 프로옉토르(Proyector) 비디오아트 페스티벌, 이미지 포럼 페스티벌, 카셀 독페스트, 25 FPS, 아키펠(Arkipel) 등 여러 그룹전과 페스티벌에서 소개되었다. 2025년 앤아버 영화제에서 신진 실험 비디오 아티스트를 위한 바바라 아로노프스키 레이섬 상을 받았으며, 피드캠퍼스(FIDCampus), 오버하우젠 세미나를 비롯해 필라델피아 RAIR, 시테 인테르나시온 데 자르, 브라운슈바이크 프로젝트(2025/2026) 등의 레지던시 프로그램에 참여했다.
