Description

A never ending Typhoon in 2019 Hong Kong outside of Room 525 has transposed the two directors into an unsettling situation of digital error of 404.

Originally inspired by the concept of Room 666 by Wim Wenders, the artist duo invited their artist/ filmmaker friends to room 525 in a hotel during their art residency in the year of 2019. Being affected by the situation of social movement in the city, they started questioning the function of artist, or rather filmmakers like themselves in time like this. Being trapped in the hotel while looking at the chaotic landscapes outside their window, the duo started the explorations to look inward and outward with their dialogues for further introspection. 

2019년 홍콩의 525호실 바깥에 닥친 끝나지 않는 태풍은 두 감독을 404 디지털 오류라는 불안한 상황으로 몰아넣었다.

본래 빔 벤더스(Wim Wenders)의 666호에 영감을 받은 이 예술가 듀오는 2019년 레지던시 기간 동안 예술가이자 영화 제작자인 친구들을 호텔 525호로 초대했다. 당시 사회 운동 상황의 영향 아래, 그들은 예술가 혹은 그들과 같은 영화 감독들의 역할에 의문을 갖기 시작했다. 창밖의 혼란스러운 풍경을 바라보며 호텔에 갇힌 이 예술가 듀오는 더 깊은 성찰을 위해 대화를 통해 내부와 외부를 들여다보기 위한 탐색을 시작했다.

Bio

Elysa Wendi and Lee Wai Shing often work as a duo team in their film creations. They both share a studio space in Hong Kong, together with 5 other independent filmmakers mainly working in between the hybridity of documentary film and experimental films , focusing on auto-fiction, social political and anthropological materials.

- Elysa Wendi is an independent filmmaker and artist based between Hong Kong and Singapore. Pre-occupied with the abstraction and displacement of memories from identities, living substances and biographical traces, Wendi explores these themes in her live and filmic works. Straddling the amorphous boundaries between borders, languages, and histories, Wendi works through hybrid documentary projects, audio-visual essays, and meta-choreographic rituals to explore the auto fictional narratives of bodies and movements. Her films have been screened widely at film festivals, including Berlinale, Jihlava, Le FIFA (Montréal), and Image Forum (Tokyo), and awarded in Hong Kong (Gold Award, 28th ifva) and Taiwan (Best Experimental Film, 17th STFF) amongst others.

-  Shing Lee is a Hong Kong independent filmmaker working in between experimental film and documentary film. He graduated from Hong Kong Design Institute in 2012 and later studied documentary filmmaking in Visible Record and Beijing Caochangdi Lab. His involvement with Chinese Independent Documentary Lab from 2016-2018 has exposed him to many independent documentary possibilities. His documentary film Family Family Day  won the Gold Award (Open Category) in the 24th ifva Awards in Hong Kong in 2019. His recent films include  Afar ( West Kowloon M+ museum commission film 2023 ),  A Long Walk (Taikwun Contemporary Arts commission film 2022),  and Room 404 (74th Berlinale Forum Expanded) to name a few. 

엘리사 웬디와 웨이 싱 리는 홍콩에서 스튜디오를 공유하며 종종 듀오로 활동하는 감독들이다. 이들은 다섯명의 다른 독립 영화 감독들과 함께 작업하며, 주로 다큐멘터리와 실험적 영화의 경계에서 활동한다. 이들의 작품은 자전 소설, 사회 정치적, 인류학적 소재에 중점을 두고 있다.

- 엘리사 웬디는 홍콩과 싱가포르를 오가며 활동하는 독립 영화 감독이자 예술가이다. 정체성, 살아있는 물질, 전기적 흔적으로부터 기억을 추상화하고 이동하는 데 몰두한 웬디는 라이브 작품과 영화 작품에서 이러한 주제를 탐구한다. 국경, 언어, 역사 사이의 무정형 경계를 넘나드는 웬디는 하이브리드 다큐멘터리 프로젝트, 시청각 에세이, 메타 안무 의식을 통해 신체와 움직임의 자전 소설 내러티브를 탐구한다. 그녀의 영화는 베를린영화제, 이흘라바(Jihlava), Le FIFA(몬트리올), 이미지 포럼(도쿄) 등의 영화제에서 폭넓게 상영되었으며, 홍콩(제28회 ifva 금상)과 대만(제17회 STFF 최우수 실험영화)에서 수상했다. 

- 웨이 싱 리는 홍콩의 독립 영화 감독으로 실험 영화와 다큐멘터리 경계에서 활동하고 있다. 2012년 홍콩 디자인 학원을 졸업한 후 Visible Record와 베이징 차오창디 연구소에서 다큐멘터리 제작을 공부했다. 2016-2018년 중국 독립 다큐멘터리 연구소와의 활동을 통해 많은 독립 다큐멘터리 가능성을 확인했다. 그의 다큐멘터리 영화 'Family Family Day'는 2019년 홍콩 ifva 어워즈에서 Open Category 부문 금상을 수상했다. 최근 작품으로는 'Afar' (서부 M+ 박물관 위탁 작품 2023), 'A Long Walk' (태근 컨템포러리 아트 위탁 작품 2022), 'Room 404' (74회 베를린 영화제 포럼 익스펜디드) 등이 있다.
