Description

When I first took up this Super 8 camera, I knew I was about to leave my home. Too Long Ago, Not Far, alludes to the Huaying Tongyu [華英通語, meaning: interchangeable expressions between Chinese and English, first published in 1867 in New York], the earliest English textbook for Chinese people that uses Cantonese phonetic notation to teach the pronunciation of English words. The four corners represent the original English (top left) and direct Chinese translation (bottom left), the Chinese phonetic notation (bottom right) and literal English translation of the notation (top right) propose another layer of object connections and entry points to word memorisation in the old days. Chinese character is a hieroglyph and Cantonese contains an almost lyrical phonology. 

This seamless editing mode offers me the base to record everything in the city as notations, things that I want to look at over and over again, just like opening an emergency dictionary in my pocket in an aimless survival mode.

처음으로 이 수퍼 8 카메라를 잡았을 때, 내가 집을 떠나려고 했음을 알았다. '너무 오래 전, 멀리 않은 곳에'는 ;Huaying Tongyu(의미: 중국어와 영어 간 상호교환되는 표현)’를 언급한다. Huaying Tongyu는 1867년 뉴욕에서 처음 출판된 중국인들을 위한 영어 교과서로, 영어 단어의 발음을 가르치기 위해 광동어 음성표기법을 사용한다. 네 개의 모퉁이는 원어(왼쪽 위)와 직역된 중국어 번역(왼쪽 아래), 중국어 음성표기법(오른쪽 아래), 그리고 음성표기법의 사전적 영어 번역(오른쪽 위)을 나타냅니다. 이는 기존 단어 암기법에 또 다른 층의 연결과 진입 지점을 제안한다. 한자는 상형문자이며, 광동어는 거의 서정적인 발음론을 포함한다. 이 매끄러운 편집 방식은 내가 도시에서 모든 것을 기호로 적어둘 기반을 제공하며, 목적 없는 생존 모드에서 주머니 속 비상용 사전을 펼치듯 여러 차례 바라보고 싶은 것들을 기록하게 한다.

Bio

YAN Wai Yin (b.1994) works and lives in Hong Kong and London. Yan excels at the juxtaposition and insertion of literary texts in narratives. Through shifting personal observations and the temporal, emotional distance in different texts, Yan inscribes quotidian fragments of memories lingering in space and objects. Her film “Localized Blindness” (2019) was awarded the Best Experimental Award at the 20th South Taiwan Film Festival, “Tugging Diary” (2020) was awarded at Taiwan Kaohsiung Film Festival and Festival des Cinémas Différents et Expérimentaux de Paris. In 2023, Yan was awarded the Asian Cultural Council New York Fellowship (2024). Solo exhibitions include: "Too Long Ago, Not Far" (Floating Projects, 2023) and "Black Bird, Frost Flower and Pink Falling Stars" (RNH Space, 2021). Solo presentations include: Duddell's Hong Kong, Tai Kwun Contemporary (Hong Kong), deArt Centre (Beijing), DAC.Taipei Digital Art Centre (Taiwan). Recent exhibitions and screenings include: M+ Museum, Blindspot Gallery, Ben Brown Gallery (Hong Kong), Galerie Urs Meile (Beijing), Yale University (US), Kunstmuseum Bonn, European Media Art Festival (Germany), IFFR (Netherlands), Videoex (Switzerland), Image Forum (Japan), EXiS (Korea), and TIVA-ANIMA (Taiwan).

YAN Wai Yin(1994년생)은 홍콩과 런던에서 활동 및 거주하는 영화감독이다. Yan은 서사에 문학적 텍스트를 삽입하고 병치하는 데 능숙하다. 다양한 텍스트에서 개인적 관찰과 시간적, 감정적 거리를 변주함으로써, 공간과 물건에 남아 있는 일상의 조각들을 기록한다.
