Description

Magritte doubted Plato's allegory of the cave through his painting The Human Condition(1935). In the 18th century Joseon Dynasty, Shin Don Bok put together the anecdote collection Hak San Han Eon, which includes a story of two people willingly venturing deep into a cave rather than seeking light outside, eventually reaching a completely different world. In this film, the two people become women, and together, they load the film into the camera. In the utter darkness where only the sound of water is heard, images emerge. In that place where everything is inverse, the camera becomes a watering can, a mirror, and a teapot.

마그리트는 <인간의 조건(1935)>을 통해 플라톤의 동굴 우화를 의심했다. 조선 후기 신돈복이 야담을 모아 펴낸 《학산한언》에는 빛을 좇아 바깥으로 나가는 것이 아니라 기꺼이 동굴 안으로 깊숙이 들어가 전혀 다른 세상에 이르는 두 사람의 이야기가 담겼다. 영화 안에서 두 사람은 여인이 되고, 이들은 함께 필름을 만지고 카메라를 든다. 물소리만이 들리는 완전한 어둠 안에서 이미지가 탄생한다. 모든 것이 뒤집힌 그곳에서 카메라는 물뿌리개, 거울, 찻주전자가 된다.

Bio

Heehyun Choi’s films are grounded on the interest in the coexistence of physicality and virtuality in projected images, the unseen beings outside the camera frame, and the subjectivity and variability of the act of seeing. Choi has received MFA in Film&Video at California Institute of the Arts. Her films have been screened at festivals including at Seoul Independent Film Festival, Seoul International ALT Cinema & Media Festival (Nemaf), DMZ International Documentary Film Festival, Images Festival, and Ann Arbor Film Festival where she received the Mariam Ghani Juror Award.

최희현은 영사된 이미지에서 발견되는 물성과 가상성의 뒤섞임, 카메라 프레임 밖으로 감추어지는 것들, 그리고 언제나 주관적이고 가변적인 ‘보기seeing’의 문제를 다루는 것에 관심이 있다. 캘리포니아 인스티튜트 오브 더 아츠 (CalArts) 필름앤비디오 석사과정을 졸업했으며 서울독립영화제, 서울국제대안영상예술페스티벌 (네마프), DMZ국제다큐멘터리영화제, 이미지스영화제에서 상영하였고 앤아버영화제에서 심사위원상을 수상하였다.
