EXiS2023 경쟁부문 EX-Now 수상작 및 심사평
제20회 서울국제실험영화페스티벌 경쟁부문 심사는 상영작들의 높은 작품성으로 인해, 수상작을 선정하는 과정에서 그 어느 해 보다 치열한 논의가 있었습니다. 심사위원분들의 노고에 감사드리며, 아래는 수상작품들에 대한 심사평입니다.
베스트 엑시즈 어워드 (Best EXiS Award)
재의 이름은 인간 (유리나 로신스카 감독)
국제 경쟁 수상작(베스트 엑시즈 어워드)으로 폴란드 필름메이커 에벨리나 로신스카(Ewelina Rosinska)의 <재의 이름은 인간>을 선정하였다. 국제 부분에서는 몇 작품이 최종 후보에 언급되었고, 그중 몇 가지 기준을 가지고 의 견을 나누었다는 것을 밝힌다. 특히 작가가 작품을 통해 관객에게 전달하고자 하는 메시지가 성공적인지, 예술이 우리 의 현실과 동떨어진 이상향으로만 작동하는 것을 경계하며 작품 너머를 사유할 수 있는 가능성을 여전히 지니고 있는 지를 중점적으로 살펴보았다. <재의 이름은 인간>은 감독 조부모의 일상을 따라가며 그들이 살고 있는 폴란드와 우크 라이나 국경 지역의 땅, 그리고 그곳을 이루고 있는 풍경을 탐구한다. 영화는 가톨릭과 자연을 관통하는 대지의 질감을 대비와 유사성의 방식으로 표현한다. 이 모든 것은 세상의 외부를 보여 주지만, 사실은 유한한 존재를 마주해야 하 는 인간의 보편적인 삶에 대한 은유이다.
코리안 엑시즈 어워드 (Korean EXiS Award)
내 집에 살던 당신에게 (전준혁 감독)
올해 경쟁부문에서는 특정 인물이 등장하지 않는 ‘풍경, 설명적인 ‘소리’와 ‘텍스트’로 구성된 영상 작품들이 몇 편 상영되었다. <내 집에 살던 당신에게>는 그런 구성의 영상 작품 중에서도 영상의 정서나 역사적 배경을 보완하는 내레이션이 없고, 영상과 텍스트(한글 폰트 포함)의 관계가 서로 강하게 간섭하고 반발하면서도 이내 순식간에 녹아드는 부분에 있어서 다른 작품과 차별점을 성취했다.
중운상 (JungWoon Award)
더스티 스네어와 섬들 (유채정 감독)
<더스티 스네어와 섬들>은 유채정 감독의 대담하고 시각적으로 충만한 영화이다. 두 여자와 함께하는 51분간의 미묘하면서도 매우 직접적인 서사에는 거의 대사가 없다. 존재와 기억 사이를 오가며 놀랍도록 직설적인 에로틱 이미지가 나타났다 사라지며 몽환적인 상태를 만들어내는 이 영화는 형식과 내용이 재밌는 균형을 이루고 있다.

Due to the high level of aesthetic achievement of each film in the competition program of the festival, there was a more intense discussion than any other year in the process of selecting the award-wining films for the 20th EXiS. We thank the judges for their hard work, and below are the reviews of the award-winning films.
Best EXiS Award
ASHES BY NAME IS MAN (EWELINA ROSINSKA)
For the international EXiS Award, we chose Ashes by Name is Man by Polish filmmaker Ewelina Rosinska. In the International section, several works were mentioned in the shortlist, and we discussed them with several criteria. In particular, we focused on whether the message that the artist wants to convey to the audience through the work is successful, and whether art still holds the possibility of thinking beyond the work, wary of operating only as something idealized from our reality. Ashes by Name is Man follows the daily lives of the director's grandparents, exploring the land they live on and the landscape that makes up their homeland. The film presents the texture of the land in ways of contrast and similarity as it penetrates the Catholicism and natural worlds. In the end, the movie seems to be an observation of the outside world, but it's actually a metaphor for the universal life of humans facing a finite existence.
Korean EXiS Award
A LETTER TO YOU WHO USED TO LIVE IN MY HOUSE (JEON JUNEHYUCK)
For this year's EXiS2023, several video works were selected to be screened that consisted of "scenery" without specific characters, and of descriptive "sound" and "text. The relationship between the images and the text (especially the Korean font) is so strong that it interferes with and repels each other, but then instantly melts into each other, making it stand out from the other works and resonate directly with the viewer's heart.
JungWoon Award
DUSTY SNARE AND ISLANDS (CHAE YU)
Chae Yu has made a courageous highly visual color film. Almost no words are spoken in her subtle and at the same time very direct 51minute long narrative with two women. The back and forth between presence and memory creates a dreamlike state, in which surprisingly direct erotic images appear and disappear. Form and content are playfully balanced.
