Chick Strand’s SOFT FICTION is a personal documentary that brilliantly portrays the survival power of female sensuality. It combines the documentary approach with sensuous lyrical expressionism. Strand focuses her camera on people talking about their own experience, capturing subtle nuances in facial expressions and gestures that are rarely seen in cinema. The title SOFT FICTION works on several levels. It evokes the soft line between truth and fiction that characterizes Strand’s own approach to documentary and suggests the idea of softcore fiction, which is appropriate to the film’s erotic content and style. Strand initially countered tradition when she refused the rules of ethnography, preferring intimacy and immediacy to the standard rules requiring distance and “objectivity.” Writing in Wide Angle, Strand notes, “To leave out the spirit of the people presents a thin tapestry of the culture, easy to rent, lacking in strength and depth. I want to know really what it is like to be a breathing, talking, moving, emotional, relating individual in the society. The films(i.e typical ethnographies) lack intimacy, dimension, heart, and soul, and most of all they are artless.” Strand quickly tossed aside the rules, making a series of lyrical documentaries. She gradually segued into narratives, although her anthropology background continued to influence her work. (Shea Castleman)


Bio
Chick Strand studied anthropology at Berkeley, and in the early 1960s organized film happenings with Bruce Baillie. Bruce Baillie taught Chick Strand basic film technique before launching film projects together. Before becoming involved with filmmaking, Strand was interested in photography and collage due to taking a photography course early on in life. In 1961, Strand established the Canyon CinemaNews, a monthly filmmakers' journal which became a focal point for the West Coast independent film movement. Baillie, among others, founded a filmmakers' collective called Canyon Cinema in 1967. Chick Strand made her first film at age 34.

Chick Strand is best known for her unique use of camera and film editing techniques to portray metaphorical meaning through the image. Strand often used camera techniques such as image overlapping and superimposed images in her films. Sound and image are relied upon to convey meaning through Strand's films.

Her films have been screened at the Museum of Modern Art and the Tate.The Academy Film Archive has preserved a number of Strand's films, including Cartoon Le Mousse, Eric and the Monsters, and Fever Dream. In 2011, Fake Fruit Factory was selected to the U.S. National Film Registry.
